The attack on Pskov airport, Russia, about 700 km from Ukraine, was carried out by drones launched from inside Russia, according to Ukrainian intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov.
Ukraine says it carried out the airport UAV attack from inside Russia.
The incident marks the latest attack to rock Russian territory since Kiev said it would “return” the conflict to Russia in July.
“Four Russian IL-76 military transport aircraft were hit as a result of the attack. Two were destroyed and two were seriously damaged,” Budanov added. The aircraft was used by the Russian Defense Ministry to transport troops and cargo, according to the Ukrainian official.
Earlier, the Kremlin said military experts were working to find routes the drones could take to “prevent such situations in the future”.
When asked about Ukraine's claims, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declined to comment and instead referred questions to the Defense Ministry.
The Pskov region, also targeted by drones in late May, is surrounded by NATO members Estonia and Latvia to the west and Belarus to the south.
