Responding to extreme weather, protecting winter crop production

At this time, the weather in Moc Son ward is erratic, with a large difference in temperature between day and night. Facing the thick frost in the early morning and the harsh sunlight at noon, farmers and cooperative members have proactively applied many solutions to protect vegetables and maintain a stable supply of quality agricultural products at the end of the year.

Farmers in residential group 34, Moc Chau ward, watered vegetables to wash away frost from early morning.

In early December, night and early morning temperatures in Moc Son ward's fields dropped sharply, often below 13°C. Frost covered the vegetable and strawberry beds. However, the biggest difficulty for farmers came not only from the cold, but also from the strong temperature difference during the day, because the time frame from 9am to 12pm is the time of intense sunlight, the temperature suddenly increased, causing frost on the leaves to act as a lens, burning leaf tissue, causing blisters, wilting and creating conditions for fungal diseases to develop. Therefore, from early morning, along the roads in the fields to the concentrated production area, it is easy to see farmers busy pulling water pipes to irrigate the plants.

Having just adjusted the sprinkler irrigation system, Mr. Nguyen Dac Muoi, residential group 34, Moc Son ward, said: His family has more than 1 hectare of vegetables and strawberries. This year, the weather is erratic, cold in the morning and hot in the afternoon. If you don't get up early to wash away the frost on the leaves, the sun will burn the leaves, stunt the plants, and make them easy to rot. In addition to watering away the frost, the family also covers the roots with straw and agricultural film to keep the soil warm, limit weeds; increase potassium, phosphorus and reduce nitrogen to make the plants stronger and more resistant to the cold. Thanks to proactive protection measures, the family's vegetable garden grows well, promising a successful harvest on the occasion of Lunar New Year.

Mr. Muoi's proactive spirit is also the common spirit of hundreds of households growing vegetables in Moc Son ward. People regularly visit their fields, closely monitor weather forecasts, have plans for covering, apply fertilizers in a balanced manner, and are determined not to let the weather damage the fruits of their labor.

In addition to traditional farming methods, the bright spot in the agricultural production picture in Moc Son is the strong shift to high-tech agricultural models. Modern greenhouses and net houses are springing up more and more, becoming a solid "shield" to protect crops from the harshness of nature.

With over 10 years of production experience, and nearly 40 members, the Natural Safe Vegetable Cooperative, in the Natural residential group, is growing 32 types of vegetables, tubers, and fruits on over 25 hectares. The Cooperative has applied the technique of growing vegetables all year round, so consumption is favorable and the economic value is high; reaching 500 million VND/ha.

Many households in Moc Son ward invest in greenhouse and net house systems to serve agricultural production.

Taking us on a tour of the cooperative's greenhouse area, Ms. Nguyen Thi Luyen, Director of the Natural Safe Vegetable Cooperative, shared: The members of the cooperative invested in building 12 hectares of greenhouses, greenhouses and mist and drip irrigation systems on 100% of the cooperative's vegetable production area. Although the initial cost of investing in greenhouses is high, it brings long-term efficiency. Crops are protected from frost, hail and harmful insects, and productivity increases by 20-30% compared to traditional farming. Most importantly, production can be done year-round, without being interrupted by extreme weather.

Currently, Moc Son ward has more than 300 hectares of various vegetables, more than 100 hectares of strawberry trees, mainly concentrated in the residential groups of Tu Nhien, Na Ang, Pa Phach... Faced with complicated weather developments, the ward People's Committee has assigned agricultural extension officers to closely monitor the area, instructing residential groups and farmers to implement technical measures to prevent cold for crops and livestock.

Ms. Tran Thi Huong, Vice Chairwoman of Moc Son Ward People's Committee, said: The ward identifies the application of high technology as a key solution to adapt to climate change. Therefore, the ward is actively coordinating with specialized agencies to organize training courses and transfer science and technology; at the same time, creating favorable conditions in terms of procedures and connecting preferential loan sources to encourage households and cooperatives to expand the area of net houses and greenhouses. The goal is to build Moc Son into a specialized area for growing high-quality, sustainable safe vegetables. Up to now, the whole ward has more than 500 hectares of vegetables and strawberries, of which the area applying high technology accounts for about 20%, contributing to improving quality and output.
