Associate Professor, Dr. Le Van Canh, Vice President of International University (Ho Chi Minh City National University), is one of the youngest candidates to be considered for the title of professor by the State Council of Professors in 2022.
Published more than 30 articles in prestigious international journals
Associate Professor, Dr. Le Van Canh (43 years old) was born and raised in Dai Hong (Dai Loc, Quang Nam ). After finishing high school, Mr. Canh studied at Hanoi University of Architecture (branch in Ho Chi Minh City). With excellent academic results at university level, he received a scholarship for the Vietnam-Belgium master's program in construction mechanics at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, majoring in construction mechanics.
A special turning point was in 2005, after completing his master's degree, Dr. Canh was selected to receive a doctoral scholarship at Sheffield University (UK) under the training program for 300 masters and doctors of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee. In 2010, after completing his studies, he returned to Vietnam and worked at the Department of Civil Engineering, International University.
By 2013, Dr. Le Van Canh had achieved the standard of associate professor and that same year won the Golden Globe Award from the Central Youth Union and the Ministry of Science and Technology . His main research directions in mechanics are numerical methods, plastic analysis of construction structures, multi-scale simulation and homogeneous calculation of composite materials. In addition to ministerial and state-level scientific research topics, Dr. Canh has published 75 scientific articles and reports, including 34 articles in prestigious international journals. In 2019, he received a certificate of merit from the Prime Minister for his excellent performance.

Once faced with many choices
Since his university days, the youngest professor candidate of 2022 had to tutor to earn extra living expenses because his family could only afford tuition. But it was the difficult years that urged him to be determined to study well to escape the difficulties. After graduating with excellent results from Hanoi University of Architecture, the engineer was selected to become a lecturer at Construction College No. 2.
“I feel luckier than my peers when I can choose the path of education to change my life. When I finished my master's degree, another good opportunity came when I received a scholarship to become a PhD student. Ho Chi Minh City gave me the opportunity to go abroad to study and do research. This is an honor and one of the great turning points in my life,” Associate Professor Canh shared.
At that time, Mr. Canh had many choices but was still determined to study abroad. “And until now, I think my choice was correct. Going abroad that year was a leap forward in my thinking and career,” he said.
In March 2010, Associate Professor Dr. Le Van Canh completed his PhD program in computational mechanics. He received invitations to do long-term postdoctoral research from three universities in the UK, Australia and Scotland. However, he decided to do short-term research and returned to Vietnam.
He explained: “Many people ask me if I regret returning to Vietnam because in England or Australia, the working conditions are better, the salary is higher, and even the education conditions for my children are better… I received a scholarship from the city, and I was expected to be able to bring knowledge back to help my homeland, so I should not disappoint that expectation. I have received too much support from my homeland.”
Furthermore, according to the youngest professor candidate of 2022: “In Vietnam, I still have my parents and my extended family. Returning, I will have the opportunity to take care of and be closer to my parents. Living far away, it will be difficult for me to show my gratitude to my parents.”
In fact, he added: “I was bold enough to come back partly because my research field only requires a powerful computer and does not require an extremely modern laboratory, so my consideration of whether to stay or leave is not too heavy. I know many other researchers who need machines and laboratories with modern equipment will consider more. I understand this because after all, researchers really need a real research environment.”

"I have many shortcomings…"
In addition to his own research, Associate Professor Dr. Le Van Canh is also the head of a strong research group in the Faculty of Construction Engineering and Management. He spends at least two sessions a week meeting with students in his research group, asking and discussing topics and articles of the students. Although he spends a lot of time and effort on research because it is his passion, Mr. Canh also cares for the younger generation, young lecturers and his students.
Regarding this point, he said: “One of my wishes when returning to Vietnam is to be able to contribute to changing the research environment and academic environment of my homeland. Therefore, I always try to bring back scholarships and sponsorships from outside for young people to encourage teachers, students and pupils to strive in the arduous research path they have chosen.”
He acknowledged: “Difficulties and obstacles in scientific research always exist and it is clear that everyone will be stuck. In particular, I also know that administrative paperwork is very time-consuming for scientists when even bidding to buy chemicals and research equipment also causes congestion in teachers' projects”. Therefore, Dr. Canh hopes: “Enterprises pay more attention to the applications of the projects that scientists have researched, and have more compatible investments to strengthen Vietnamese scientists”.
When asked about his biggest weakness, the youngest professor candidate of 2022 humbly shared: “A lot, I still have many shortcomings. I do not have enough focus on my work while I can do more. I, sometimes, get distracted by external influences. If possible, I will try harder to focus on my goals.”
