Prioritize investment in important and urgent projects for the Mekong Delta region.

At the conference, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment informed about the Project on prevention and control of subsidence, landslides, flooding, drought, and saltwater intrusion in the Mekong Delta region until 2035, with a vision to 2050, the purpose and solutions to implement the Project in the coming time.

Accordingly, in recent years, landslides in the Mekong Delta have begun to increase significantly. From 2016 to present, 812 landslides have appeared with a total length of more than 1,191km, causing serious damage.

Along with that, in recent years, the Mekong Delta has experienced 3 severe droughts and saltwater intrusions; of which, there were 2 historic highs in the dry seasons of 2015-2016 and 2019-2020, seriously affecting people's lives and production.

Therefore, the Project on preventing and combating land subsidence, riverbank/coastal erosion, inundation, drought, and saline intrusion in the Mekong Delta region until 2035, with a vision to 2050, was developed to identify programs and projects that need to be prioritized to synchronously implement solutions to prevent and combat the negative impacts of climate change, land subsidence, riverbank/coastal erosion, inundation, drought, and saline intrusion in the Mekong Delta region.

Provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta region attended the conference.

Speaking at the conference, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha emphasized that the Party, State and Government have paid great attention and issued many resolutions, strategies, programs and overall action plans on sustainable development of the Mekong Delta and adaptation to climate change. In addition, ministries and branches have also developed and implemented many specific projects.

Regarding the Project on preventing and combating land subsidence, riverbank and coastal erosion, flooding, drought, and saltwater intrusion in the Mekong Delta region until 2035, with a vision to 2050, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha suggested that ministries and branches need to focus on research and prioritize the selection of important and urgent projects for the Mekong Delta region, especially multi-purpose projects./.
