At the conference, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment provided information on the Project for preventing and combating subsidence, landslides, flooding, drought, and saltwater intrusion in the Mekong Delta region until 2035, with a vision to 2050, as well as the objectives and solutions for implementing the Project in the coming period.
Accordingly, in recent years, landslides in the Mekong Delta region have begun to increase significantly. From 2016 to the present, 812 landslide points have appeared with a total length of more than 1,191km, causing serious damage.
In addition, in recent years, the Mekong Delta region has experienced three severe droughts and saltwater intrusion events; including two historically high events during the dry seasons of 2015-2016 and 2019-2020, seriously affecting the lives and production of the people.
Therefore, the Project on preventing and combating land subsidence, riverbank and coastal erosion, flooding, drought, and saltwater intrusion in the Mekong Delta region until 2035, with a vision to 2050, was developed to identify priority programs and projects to implement synchronously solutions to prevent and mitigate the negative impacts of climate change, land subsidence, riverbank/coastal erosion, flooding, drought, and saltwater intrusion in the Mekong Delta region.
Provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta region attended the conference.
In his remarks at the conference, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha emphasized that the Party, State, and Government are very concerned and have issued many resolutions, strategies, programs, and comprehensive action plans on sustainable development of the Mekong Delta region and adaptation to climate change. In addition, ministries and agencies have also developed and implemented many specific projects and programs.
Regarding the Project on preventing and combating land subsidence, riverbank and coastal erosion, flooding, drought, and saltwater intrusion in the Mekong Delta region until 2035, with a vision to 2050, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha suggested that ministries and agencies should focus on researching and prioritizing the selection and construction of important and urgent projects for the Mekong Delta region, especially multi-purpose projects.
