V.League 2025-2026: Ready for "fiery" matches

V.League 2025-2026 will kick off this evening (August 15) with the match between Hanoi Police and Viettel The Cong, opening a season with many "million euro" contracts or approximately tens of billions of dong.

The 2025-2026 V.League player transfer market has witnessed an unprecedented wave of spending, with contracts valued at up to a million euros or close to the "million euro" mark.

Leading the foreign player valuation is center back Matheus Felipe Santos (Brazil) of Ho Chi Minh City Police Club. Matheus Felipe is valued at 1 million euros (about 30.5 billion VND) by international player transfer website Transfermarkt – a new record for V.League. He surpassed Njabulo Blom (South Africa) – a new player of Nam Dinh Steel Blue with a value of 950,000 euros (28.9 billion VND).

Hanoi FC is also in the group of big spenders with the signing of Willian Maranhão (900,000 euros) and before that, central defender Adriel da Silva - the champion of the Austrian Second Division in the 2021-2022 season. Or Ha Tinh also attracted attention with the recruitment of Ukrainian player Yevgeniy Serdyuk (800,000 euros). Meanwhile, the defending champion Thep Xanh Nam Dinh added goalkeeper Caique Luiz Santos da Purificação (800,000 euros) along with a series of quality foreign players such as Kyle Hudlin (England, 2m06 tall), Mahmoud Eid (Palestine).

Not only the traditional teams, the new recruit Ninh Binh also attracted attention with the recruitment of central defender Patrick Marcelino (Brazil, 300,000 euros), who played in the Japanese professional football league (J-League) and the Iraqi national championship. The Hanoi Police Club and The Cong Viettel also added foreign players, naturalized players and players of Vietnamese origin abroad to serve the goal of competing for the championship.

These huge expenditures have caused the value of the entire league to skyrocket. According to Transfermarkt, last season the V.League was valued at 37.22 million euros. On July 1, 2025, the figure was 42.65 million euros. By mid-August 2025, thanks to the massive shopping spree, the value of the league had reached 52.44 million euros - an increase of nearly 10 million euros (more than 300 billion VND) in just 1.5 months.

The appearance of foreign players with higher transfer values than before has contributed to raising the image of V.League on the regional football map. However, it will take time to determine whether this is a "hot development" period for Vietnamese professional football or not? In fact, massive spending without a sustainable strategy can easily lead to a financial crisis, especially when the revenue of Vietnamese football is not really stable and depends heavily on sponsors.

V.League 2025-2026 will have time to register additional players until the end of round 3, which means the tournament value can continue to increase. The presence of expensive foreign players and quality Vietnamese faces will create an attractive professional picture, more dramatic confrontations.

However, the big problem for managers and clubs is how to sustain this attraction. Investments of “millions of dollars” or so will only be effective if accompanied by a commercial exploitation plan, brand building and youth training system to be self-sufficient in human resources and finance instead of depending on funding from a business. Reality has shown that if only relying on short-term funding, the tournament can easily fall into unsustainable and unstable development.

Exciting Hanoi derby

The opening match of V.League 2025-2026 will take place at Hang Day Stadium on the evening of August 15 between Hanoi Police and Viettel The Cong. This is considered a classic "derby" of Vietnamese football when both teams possess many of the top players of V.League.
