Childhood tuberculosis is a priority issue of the National Tuberculosis Control Program.

On the morning of May 29, VicePresident Vo Thi Anh Xuan visited the Central Lung Hospital and pediatric patients on the occasion of International Children's Day, June 1.

Dr. Dinh Van Luong, Director of the Central Lung Hospital, said that the National Tuberculosis Control Program has achieved the best results ever with the number of tuberculosis patients detected and admitted for treatment reaching more than 103,000 cases per year.

Of these, childhood tuberculosis is a priority issue for the program. Currently, only 1,000-1,300 cases of childhood tuberculosis have been reported, accounting for less than 20% of the estimated number of cases.

Every year, the Pediatrics Department of the Central Lung Hospital treats about 250-300 cases of pediatric tuberculosis, mainly severe and complicated tuberculosis such as tuberculosis of the meninges, miliary tuberculosis, tuberculosis of the spine, and drug-resistant tuberculosis. Therefore, treatment costs increase and the duration is prolonged.

“Thus, the majority of pediatric TB patients in the community have not been detected and have not been treated due to many difficulties in diagnosing pediatric TB. Specifically, the symptoms are atypical, the ability to find bacteria is low, and specialized intervention techniques are difficult,” Dr. Luong added.

Fortunately, the success rate of treating tuberculosis in children is quite high, over 95%.

In addition, the hospital also successfully performed 7 lung transplants, one of the most difficult techniques in organ transplantation.

The health sector tries its best to forecast the situation of diseases and epidemics.

Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan praised the achievements and contributions of the Central Lung Hospital.

According to the Vice President, as the country develops and society develops, one thing becomes clearer: health is the most valuable asset of human beings. It directly affects the quality of life of each individual, the prosperity and happiness of each family, the quality of human resources and the burden of social security for every country.

The health sector's human resources are also growing in all aspects, quantity, quality, and qualifications, including many shining examples of medical ethics and expertise.

Contributing to that common achievement is the role of the Central Lung Hospital with two important tasks: treating lung-related diseases and preventing tuberculosis.

“In addition to the achievements, the hospital also acknowledges that there are many difficulties and challenges that need to be overcome, especially the tuberculosis prevention program.

There are still 6,000-7,000 children with TB in the community who have not been detected or treated. This is something we need to think seriously about and take measures to overcome in the coming time,” the Vice President emphasized.

Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan suggested that the health sector try to best forecast the situation of diseases, epidemics, and people's health status in order to build a strategy for people's health care to meet the requirements of the new situation.

The industry also needs to advise the Party and State to promptly complete policies, laws and mechanisms to implement important strategies.
