Why do thin people still have high blood fat?

Many people still think that only overweight people are at risk of diseases related to blood lipids. However, in reality, even people with a body mass index (BMI) within the normal range, especially office workers, can also experience lipid disorders, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease and other dangerous diseases.

To improve lipid disorders, doctors often recommend a treatment plan that combines three elements: a scientific diet, increased exercise, and medication (if necessary).

Ms. Bui Thi Men (32 years old, Hanoi ) is a typical example. She has a balanced figure with a weight of 53kg, a height of 1.55m, and a BMI of 22.1, within the normal range.

Due to her busy office work, Ms. Men had little time to exercise, leading to her waistline increasing to 82cm. Although she tried many diets, she could not reduce her belly fat, and thought that this fat accumulation was due to age.

However, when she had a health check at the hospital, she was surprised to discover that her blood cholesterol level was higher than the safe threshold. Her total cholesterol index was 6.92 mmol/L, higher than the normal level (below 5.2 mmol/L).

In particular, the LDL-C index (bad cholesterol) was 4.87 mmol/L, exceeding the safe level (below 3.4 mmol/L). These are signs of fatty blood, putting her at risk of cardiovascular disease.

Ms. Van (28 years old, Hanoi), another office worker, also fell into a similar situation. After giving birth, she gained 12kg during pregnancy and despite starting a diet combined with high-intensity exercise, she still accumulated fat in her abdomen (waist 85cm) and thighs, her weight stopped at 60kg.

She also had high cholesterol and uric acid levels, and had suffered a back injury from intense home workouts that led to a herniated disc. Although her BMI was still within the normal range, her blood lipids and health were in serious trouble.

Both cases are typical examples of the "skinny fat" group of patients (thin but with belly fat), which is very common in the office worker community. Specialist II Doctor Vu Thuy Thanh explains that although the body appears thin, the accumulation of visceral fat (belly fat) poses a risk of cardiovascular diseases, stroke, and diabetes.

According to medical experts, many thin people still have lipid disorders due to some common causes such as genetic factors: Primary lipid disorders can originate from genetic factors. If the father or mother has lipid problems, the children are likely to have this condition, regardless of their physical condition.

Sedentary: People who are sedentary, especially office workers, are at higher risk of dyslipidemia. A sedentary lifestyle leads to an increase in bad cholesterol (LDL-C) in the body.

Unscientific diet: The habit of eating a lot of foods containing bad cholesterol, such as margarine, red meat, egg yolks, and shrimp, can cause blood lipids to increase. An unhealthy diet is the main cause of dyslipidemia, even in thin people.

Alcohol abuse: Even if you are not overweight, alcohol abuse can increase the level of bad cholesterol (LDL-C) in your blood.

Although BMI is an important indicator in assessing body fatness, Dr. Vu Thuy Thanh emphasized that waist circumference also plays an important role in identifying the risk of visceral fat, a factor that determines the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

According to this doctor, a large waist circumference (over 80cm for women and over 90cm for men) is a warning sign of fat accumulation in internal organs, which is much more dangerous than subcutaneous fat. Visceral fat can cause serious complications such as atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.

To improve lipid disorders, doctors often recommend a treatment plan that combines three elements: a scientific diet, increased exercise, and medication (if necessary).

In addition to changing lifestyle, many people choose to use high technology to support fat loss. One of the popular methods today is fat freezing technology, which has been recognized by the FDA.

This method works by using cold temperatures from -5 to -10 degrees Celsius to freeze and destroy fat cells, then the body automatically eliminates them without causing negative effects on blood fat or the circulatory system.

For Ms. Men, after applying the fat freezing method at Tam Anh General Hospital, she lost 1.8kg and her waistline decreased from 82cm to 75cm after only 5 weeks of treatment. Similarly, Ms. Van also lost weight and belly fat after one intervention.

Office workers often sit for long periods of time, have little exercise, and have an unbalanced diet, which increases the risk of lipid disorders and cardiovascular diseases. Although BMI may be at a normal level, if your waistline is too large or your blood lipid index exceeds the safe threshold, you may still encounter serious health problems.

To prevent and control high blood fat, doctors recommend that people increase physical activity at least 30 minutes a day, at least 5 days a week.

Maintain a healthy diet, avoid foods high in bad cholesterol and saturated fatty acids. Have regular health check-ups to monitor blood lipid levels and take timely intervention measures.

Dyslipidemia is not only found in obese people but is also a serious health problem for many people with normal weight, especially office workers. Therefore, controlling blood lipids and waist circumference is very important to protect long-term health.
