At the regular press conference of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs this afternoon, the press reported that US President Donald Trump has ordered all US embassies around the world to stop interviewing for new visas for foreign students, and this decision affects Vietnamese students planning to study in the US.

Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang shared that this is a great concern of many students and parents. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Vietnamese representative agencies in the US are working with the US side to find out information.

"This is the time when many students from many countries, including Vietnam, are preparing to apply for visas to study in the US under the form of scholarships and self-funded study abroad.

We hope that interviews and visa applications for Vietnamese students will be conducted smoothly, so thateducation continues to be a pillar of cooperation in the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries," the spokesperson said.

In response to President Trump's announcement requiring Harvard University to stop enrolling international students and requiring current international students to transfer schools or lose their legal status in the US, the Foreign Ministry spokesperson said that Vietnam hopes the US will continue to create favorable conditions for Vietnamese students, teachers, scholars and experts to participate in education and training programs in the US, including prestigious and high-quality universities, in line with the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for peace, cooperation and sustainable development.

Previously, on May 27, the US Department of State issued a telegram, instructing the consular section at all US embassies to stop scheduling additional visa interviews (F, M and J) for students or exchange students until further instructions are given in a few days.

The US has revoked Harvard University’s right to accept international students, removing the school from a program that allows it to sponsor visas for foreign students. However, the decision has faced strong backlash from the courts and is currently suspended by a federal judge.

The suspension of student visa interviews could result in extended delays that could impact summer and fall admissions plans for students and exchange participants. In addition, the reduction in international student numbers could also hurt many universities’ budgets.
