Vietnam hosts international student programming competition for the first time

From March 1 to 2, the final round of the ICPC Asia Pacific Championship 2024 will take place at the University of Engineering and Technology, Vietnam National University, Hanoi. This is the first time Vietnam has hosted this international competition.

The competition gathered 195 IT students (65 teams) and 50 coaches from 40 leading universities in Japan, Korea, Taiwan (China), Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam. The teams coming to Vietnam to participate in the final were selected from the top teams in the regional ICPC qualifying rounds at: ICPC Asia Yokohama, Seoul, Jakarta and Hue City. Vietnam was represented by 12 teams from Hanoi , Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang.

The focus of the competition is on programming skills, algorithms, completion, teamwork and foreign languages. These are the basic foundations for future IT professionals.

According to the Organizing Committee, the entire exam will be operated on online scoring systems according to international standards, the VNOJ online monitoring system operated by the Vietnam Olympic Club. The results of the exam will be announced live in real time, "frozen" one hour before the end, to keep the final prize confidential until the announcement at the closing ceremony - award ceremony on the evening of March 2.

The results of the ICPC Asia Pacific Championship 2024 will determine the continental champion as well as the 16 best teams to qualify for the ICPC Global Finals held in Kazakhstan in September this year.

The ICPC International Collegiate Programming Contest has a history of more than 50 years, with the aim of helping students develop creativity, teamwork, innovation in building software programs and allowing testing of performance under a very high time pressure.

According to Mr. Nguyen Long, Chairman of ICPC Vietnam, Co-Director of ICPC Asia Pacific, General Secretary of the Vietnam Computer Association, on average, nearly 1 million students worldwide participate in ICPC qualifying rounds each year. In 2022, the ICPC continental qualifying round alone attracted about 75,000 students from 3,450 universities in 111 countries. Most of those universities are very strong in the field of information technology training.
