In October alone, 1.66 million Australians departed for international destinations, up 12.1% year-on-year. Japan saw a staggering 73.8% year-on-year increase (by the end of October 2024, the number of Australian visitors to Japan had increased by 567,330 compared to the same period last year). Vietnam saw a 35.4% increase (423,630) and Indonesia saw a 26% increase (1,644,010).

ATIA Director of Membership and Industry Richard Taylor said destinations such as Japan, Vietnam and Indonesia were experiencing unprecedented growth. The figures show the changing preferences of Australian travellers. Leisure travel is driving the increase, with 63.6% of Australians choosing to travel for their holidays.
