Experts and universities agree that improving research capacity, academic infrastructure and industry-academia links are key to sustainable AI development.
Recently, at a seminar on AI and university training, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Vu - Deputy Head of the Faculty of Information Technology, University of Science , VNU-HCM - said that Vietnam is facing a great opportunity to rise to the top of the region if it knows how to build a high-quality human resource force: "Vietnam has the advantage of a young population, a large number of software engineers and a stable STEM foundation."

Currently, many domestic universities have opened new AI majors or majors, and invested in upgrading laboratory infrastructure, machines, and GPU servers - to serve research and practice. However, according to school leaders, "infrastructure + programs" alone are not enough. There needs to be a real research environment, linked with businesses, policies to encourage invention and innovation, and a reward mechanism for scientists and graduate students for long-term development.
One current shortcoming is the lack of synchronous connection between participating parties - schools, research institutes, businesses and the state. Therefore, many ideas, even though formed in the academic environment, still have difficulty in practical application. That is also the reason why many experts propose building a comprehensive AI ecosystem, from training, research, to application development, commercialization and policy support.
In addition to human resources, the state also needs to pay attention to the legal framework and research support mechanisms - especially intellectual property protection, investment support and encouraging businesses to join hands in developing AI. This is an important foundation for AI research products to be put into practice, serving businesses, society and enhancing national competitiveness.
The general assessment from experts shows that if Vietnam invests comprehensively - from human resources, training programs, infrastructure, to research environment and policies - the goal of joining the top 3 ASEAN countries in AI is not unrealistic. However, that requires close coordination and long-term determination from the government, education and businesses.
