Vietnam rose from 44th to 41st place in the 2023 Global Peace Index released by the Institute for Economics and Peace.
The Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), headquartered in Sydney, Australia, announced the Global Peace Index (GPI) 2023 at the end of June, ranking the level of peace over the past year of 163 countries and territories.
Vietnam is among the countries that improved their peace index ranking, rising from 44 to 41. Iceland has been rated the most peaceful country in the world since 2008, followed by Denmark and Ireland.

Seven of the 10 most peaceful countries in the world are in Europe, two are in Asia, Singapore and Japan, and the remaining country is New Zealand. This is the year with the most European countries in the top 10 most peaceful countries.
By region, Europe is the most peaceful place in the world. However, due to tensions with Russia, the region is less peaceful than it was 15 years ago.
The report found that the world appears to be slightly less safe than last year, and that this will continue in 2022 due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. The report highlighted that while some countries are spending less on their military, many are engaged in external conflicts.
The number of people killed in conflicts around the world last year was the highest this century. 56% of the world's countries are involved in external conflicts, showing the internationalization of conflict.
Political instability decreased in 59 countries over the past year and improved in 22. The Russia-Ukraine conflict has affected global stability, but the team said the death toll in Ukraine, at 83,000, was lower than the death toll from the conflict in Ethiopia (100,000).
The US ranked 131st in the GPI report. Research shows that the US homicide rate is six times higher than Western Europe due to gun violence and political tensions.
The world's least peaceful countries remain unchanged year after year. Afghanistan is the least peaceful country for the eighth year in a row, followed by Yemen, Syria, South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The gap between the most and least peaceful countries continues to widen, showing how difficult it is to change the trajectory of a country, or even a region.
The GPI calculates the global peace index based on three broad themes: the level of safety and security in societies, the level of domestic and international conflict, and the level of militarization. The index takes into account internal factors such as violence and crime in countries, as well as external factors such as military spending and war.
