These engines power two previously announced aircraft orders in 2016 and 2018, with aircraft expected to begin delivery from 2025.
Vietjet is a long-standing customer of CFM International, currently operating 56 Airbus A321ceo and 17 A320ceo aircraft equipped with CFM56-5B engines.
The partnership will take the relationship between Vietjet and CFM to the next level, with Safran and CFM’s industry-leading expertise to deliver breakthrough technology products. The deployment of the advanced LEAP engine in the future will support Vietjet’s sustainable growth strategy, allowing the airline to optimize operating costs on fuel-efficient aircraft, while providing customers with the best flying experiences.
“For more than a decade, we have worked closely with Vietjet Air to introduce technical management support, training and fuel efficiency improvement programs for the airline’s CFM56 fleet and look forward to extending these activities to the new LEAP-1B engine.
We are deeply honored by the great trust that Vietjet has shown in CFM and we welcome this opportunity to further strengthen the special relationship established this year to bring good results in the future,” said Mr. Gaël Méheust, President and CEO of CFM International.
The CFM LEAP engine family delivers 15% to 20% lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, as well as significantly improved noise, compared to previous generation engines. With more than 3,500 LEAP-equipped aircraft in service, the engine has helped CFM customers avoid more than 35 million metric tons of CO2 emissions, making it the most successful new product launch in CFM’s 50-year history, with the fastest engine hour growth rate ever in the industry – surpassing 60 million hours in just eight years.
Dr. Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, Chairwoman of Vietjet Air, proudly shared: "We appreciate and are honored by the strategic relationship between the two sides. It is advanced engine manufacturers such as Safran and CFM that have joined Vietjet in bringing cost-saving flying opportunities to millions of people, contributing to the development of the aviation industry in the most dynamic Asia-Pacific region in the world , including Vietnam.
Today’s agreement to operate fuel-efficient engines is part of Vietjet’s commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly development. Passengers will benefit even more on the airline’s green flights.”
Since the establishment of bilateral relations, Vietnam and France have always made their mark in trade relations with impressive figures. In particular, the long-term strategic partnership between Vietjet and Safran/CFM has contributed to trade turnover, promoted tourism and joint investment between the two countries, and created more jobs for the French people.
The cooperation between Vietjet and Safran not only includes engine supply through the CFM International joint venture, but also extends to many other areas such as: aircraft seats, aircraft cabin interiors, engine technical management training services as well as opportunities to establish high-tech maintenance and repair complexes and training in Vietnam, aiming to build aviation support industries, in the journey to make Vietnam become a regional aviation hub.
