Horrific car explosion in India, 8 people killed

(CLO) At least 8 people were killed and 20 others injured in a serious car explosion near the Red Fort in the Indian capital New Delhi on November 10.

City police spokesman Sanjay Tyagi said the exact cause of the blast was still being investigated. “Eight people were killed in the blast,” he said.

India's Home Minister Amit Shah said "all angles" were being investigated and security agencies would soon come to a conclusion. According to the Delhi Fire Department, at least six cars and three auto-rickshaws caught fire, but the blaze has been brought under control.

Witnesses said several disfigured bodies and burned-out vehicles were strewn across a busy street near a metro station in Delhi's old quarter.

A total of seven fire engines arrived at the scene.

Delhi Police Chief Satish Golcha said the blast occurred just minutes before 7 p.m. “A slow-moving car stopped at a red light and then exploded. The force of the explosion damaged several vehicles in the vicinity,” he said.

Local media reported that the capital Mumbai and the populous state of Uttar Pradesh were put on high security alert following the incident.
