On May 18, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health said it had received a report from Military Hospital 175 ( Ministry of National Defense ) about a case of a patient experiencing serious complications after undergoing liposuction surgery and being transferred from Gia Dinh General Hospital (Binh Thanh District).
Immediately afterwards, the Department of Health sent a team of experts to quickly assess the conditions to ensure patient safety during cosmetic surgery at Gia Dinh General Hospital.
Through that, the delegation noted that there are many issues that need to be clarified in infection control, treatment indications, and patient care at this hospital.
Based on the initial assessment of the inspection team, the Department of Health has issued a document requesting the Director of Gia Dinh General Hospital to temporarily suspend liposuction-related techniques and urgently review all conditions to ensure patient safety according to regulations.
Specifically, the hospital needs to seriously implement the "Comprehensive care process for patients undergoing liposuction and abdominoplasty" issued by the Department of Health, and report corrective solutions to the authorities.
After the hospital reports on the implementation of corrective measures, the Department of Health will organize an inspection team to re-evaluate and will send a written report to the Ministry of Health .

As Dan Tri reported, on May 3, Gia Dinh General Hospital admitted Ms. E. (57 years old, Indonesian nationality) with excess fat in her belly, hips and back.
The patient was examined and consulted before liposuction surgery. Two days after surgery, the hospital noted that the female client's surgical wound showed signs of infection, so a treatment consultation was conducted.
After 2 days of intensive care, seeing that Mrs. E.'s progress had not shown any positive signs, Gia Dinh General Hospital transferred the patient to Military Hospital 175 on May 9, in a state of septic shock and acute heart failure.
Speaking to reporters, the leader of Gia Dinh General Hospital said that Ms. E. was introduced here by a cosmetic facility.
During the pre-operative examination, the doctors noted that the woman had diabetes, so they advised her of possible complications during surgery. However, the patient decided to sign a consent form to undergo surgery.
After the cosmetic accident occurred, the hospital contacted the patient's family, and the patient's daughter flew from Indonesia to Vietnam to take care of her mother.
"This is an unexpected medical incident. The hospital continues to coordinate with the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health to clarify and monitor the patient's condition," Gia Dinh General Hospital informed.
Regarding ensuring patient safety in implementing liposuction techniques, on January 7, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health issued the "Comprehensive care process for patients undergoing liposuction and abdominoplasty surgery".
This is a detailed technical process that has been developed by experts from different specialties (including: surgery, anesthesia, resuscitation, cosmetic surgery, internal medicine, nursing, etc.) in collaboration according to each stage that the patient must go through when indicated and having liposuction surgery.
Each step clearly states what needs to be done, who does it, how it is done, what situations may arise, and how to resolve them.
The Department of Health requires all medical examination and treatment facilities approved for the list of liposuction techniques to organize training and strictly implement this process.
