The World Health Organization said yesterday that it is monitoring several variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, including the EG.5 variant that is spreading in the US and UK.

The risk of a more dangerous variant emerging could lead to a sudden increase in cases and deaths, WHO Director-General Tedros said, adding that the WHO is expected to release a risk assessment report on the variant today.
The agency also issued a set of recommendations for the COVID-19 pandemic, calling on countries to continuously report COVID-19 data, especially data on mortality and cases, and to continue vaccination.
