Recently, we went to Bac village with the professional staff of Dong Viet Commune People's Committee right when people were entering the watermelon harvest season. At the field of Mr. Le Van Vinh's family (born in 1960), 5-6 people were concentrating on transporting watermelons to the shore, handing them over to traders to take them to consumption.

Taking a break, Mr. Vinh said that in the past, on the agricultural land area, he and his wife, as well as other households in the village, only focused on growing 2 rice crops and 1 sweet potato crop. Although they were interested in introducing new rice varieties into cultivation, their family only had enough to eat. 20 years ago, after learning about the watermelon growing model in some localities, he brought it back to try planting on 4 sao of his family's agricultural land. A few years later, seeing the effectiveness, he and his wife decided to rent land and expand the area.
Currently, on an area of nearly 1 hectare, Mr. Vinh's family grows 3 watermelon crops each year. With a yield of 7 quintals/sao, an average selling price of 7,500 VND/kg, each year he earns nearly 150 million VND, with a profit of more than 90 million VND. "To increase value and reduce labor, I plant in alternating batches, ensuring that each crop has products harvested scattered over nearly 1 month. Between crops, I plant rice to proactively source food," Mr. Vinh shared.
With the advantage of having more than 1,500 hectares of agricultural land and 227 hectares of aquaculture, in recent years, the Party Committee and People's Committee of Dong Viet commune (the commune was formed on the basis of merging the communes: Dong Viet, Dong Phuc and Duc Giang - PV) have focused on leading and directing the development of commodity agriculture associated with the market, applying science and technology to increase productivity and product quality.
