Clean classrooms, ready for the opening day
Due to the impact of storm No. 5 at the end of August, Kieu Phu commune suffered heavy rainfall, with 380mm in just a few days, causing widespread flooding. According to statistics, the whole commune had 497 households affected, of which 261 households had their houses flooded; many dykes and roads were flooded; dozens of hectares of rice, vegetables and more than 200 hectares of aquaculture were affected. A number of schools, including Tuyet Nghia Kindergarten, were also flooded, seriously threatening the living and learning conditions of students and teachers.

As soon as the water began to recede, the People's Committee of Kieu Phu commune implemented the motto "where the water recedes, there is sanitation", mobilizing hundreds of cadres, militia, union members, youth and people to participate in cleaning. More than 14 tons of lime powder were provided to the villages to disinfect village roads, alleys, garbage areas and barns. Medical forces and unions coordinated with teachers and parents to conduct general cleaning at schools, spraying disinfectants to prevent epidemics.
Mr. Tran Hung, Deputy Head of the Economic Department of Kieu Phu Commune, said: “The top priority now is to ensure environmental sanitation and prevent the risk of post-flood epidemics. In particular, for schools, we mobilize all our forces to clean and disinfect classrooms to be clean and dry, ready to welcome students on the opening day of September 5.”

The urgent atmosphere was recorded at Tuyet Nghia Kindergarten as early as September 3. Although the school yard was still covered in mud after flooding, more than 60 people including militia, union members, teachers and the local fire prevention and fighting unit coordinated to clean up and spray disinfectant. Each classroom, table and chair set, and children's toys were cleaned; the school yard, hallways, and restrooms were scrubbed, sprinkled with lime powder, and sprayed with disinfectant.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Minh, Principal of Tuyet Nghia Kindergarten, shared: “In the past few days, we have been very worried because water flooded the yard. But thanks to the timely support of the government and militia, after only two days of cleaning, the school was clean again. We are confident to welcome the children to the new school year.”

In many other villages such as Thong Dat, Muon Ro, Ngoc Bai, after the water receded, people also urgently cleaned up local schools. Working groups were assigned to check and monitor the progress, ensuring that there was no remaining mud or wastewater causing unsanitary conditions. At the same time, the commune health station coordinated with the education sector to check domestic water sources, instructing people and teachers on how to disinfect and prevent epidemics during the rainy season.
Many parents expressed their agreement with the commune’s efforts. Mr. Duong Van Phuong in Liep Nghia said: “Just a few days ago, the water was knee-deep in the yard. Now the road to school is dry and the school is clean. Seeing teachers and students enthusiastically cleaning up, we feel more secure and confident.”

Proactively overcome and prevent epidemics
Along with schools, Kieu Phu has also carried out large-scale disinfection work synchronously. The Commune People's Committee has established environmental sanitation teams in each village, launched a movement for people to participate in disinfection, garbage collection, and mud leveling. Especially, in areas with long-term flooding such as Liep Mai, Ngoc Bai, Can Ha, Can Thuong, etc., lime powder and chemical spraying have been carried out many times to minimize pathogens.

The Commune Civil Defense Command mobilized more than 700 people, along with mechanical vehicles such as excavators and motorboats to clear sewers and drain water for residential areas and concentrated livestock areas. At the same time, households were instructed to treat well water and domestic water after flooding with chlorine and lime powder.
Mr. Phung Huy Dien, Chairman of Kieu Phu Commune People's Committee affirmed: "The lesson learned from this flood is that natural disaster prevention and control must be closely linked to the task of ensuring environmental sanitation and taking care of people's health. We determine that cleaning schools is not only about cleaning facilities, but also about responsibility to future generations."
Notably, along with sanitation support, Kieu Phu commune promptly visited and presented more than 150 gifts and necessities to disadvantaged, near-poor and single households in flooded areas. This not only helps people overcome the immediate consequences but also encourages them to soon stabilize their lives.

By September 4, schools in Kieu Phu commune had basically completed cleaning and disinfection. Red flags and banners welcoming the new school year were hung solemnly in front of the school gates, signaling a determined start after the natural disaster. Students will be welcomed to class in a clean, safe space, without the worry of post-flood epidemics.
The proactive and decisive government and the consensus of the people are key factors that help Kieu Phu quickly overcome difficulties. The promotion of disinfection not only protects public health at present, but also creates a premise for the locality to build a more sustainable and safer living environment in the future. True to the spirit of "where the water recedes, there is sanitation", Kieu Phu commune is gradually turning difficulties into opportunities, so that every day at school for students is a happy, safe and complete day.
