Women join hands to build new countryside

Chau Thanh Commune Women's Union encourages women to start businesses and develop the economy , contributing to the locality's completion of the criteria for an advanced new-style rural commune.

The road in Hamlet 7, Vinh Thuan Dong Commune is covered with brilliant flowers. Ms. Truong Thi Kim, a local resident, shared: “Mobilized by the Women's Union, the members organized environmental sanitation, planted flowers, and built green fences. Thanks to everyone joining hands and contributing, now the village road is clean and beautiful, everyone is excited.”

Along with planting flowers and making green fences, the Women's Union of Vinh Thuan Dong commune mobilized members and women to build bio-waste pits, classify waste at source... to create a green - clean - beautiful landscape, helping the locality maintain environmental criteria - a difficult but sustainable criterion in the National Criteria for New Rural Construction in the period 2021-2025. Ms. Tran Nguyen Thu Hai, President of the Women's Union of Vinh Thuan Dong commune, said: "Joining hands to build New Rural Construction, in the past time, we have launched and implemented many practical movements and campaigns, attracting members and women to participate. Including typical activities and models: "Exchanging plastic waste for green trees", "Collecting plastic waste", "Garbage treatment team at source"... to create a clean and beautiful living environment".

Women in Vinh Thuan Dong commune stand out in the environmental criteria, while in Vi Thuy commune, women contribute to the income criteria - the "leverage" of building a new rural area. Ms. Le Thi Thanh in Hamlet 7 confided: "Before, I only did farming and housework. After learning and participating in weaving water hyacinth, I have an additional income of nearly 3 million VND per month. Since then, family life has gradually become more stable."

In recent times, the Women's Union of Vi Thuy commune has effectively maintained livelihood support models: "Rich women help poor women", "Seed bank", "Support group for poverty alleviation"; at the same time, it has coordinated with the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the commune to support 26 poor women to borrow capital from 10-15 million VND for livestock and crop production. Up to now, all of them have escaped poverty sustainably.

In Chau Thanh, the Women's Union of the commune mobilized members to boldly convert crops, livestock, and production towards safety, and develop OCOP products. In the period of 2021-2025, the Women's Union of the commune launched the Nhut Linh Handicraft Cooperative, the Chau Anh Cooperative Group, and 4 points linking the consumption of women's agricultural products; supporting 180 women's households to escape poverty and near-poverty in many forms. Ms. Nguyen Thi Cam Chan, President of the Women's Union of Chau Thanh commune, shared: "The Union focuses on enhancing women's economic power, encouraging women to start businesses, developing the economy associated with the One Commune One OCOP Product program". To date, the whole commune has 13 3-star OCOP products owned by women.

Through practical activities and models, it can be seen that the movement of women joining hands to build new rural areas in Can Tho City is not just a slogan but has become a specific action in each locality. Women's Unions at all levels have integrated the campaign "Building a family of 5 no's, 3 clean's" (no poverty - no law violations - no domestic violence - no third child - no malnourished children; clean house - clean kitchen - clean alley) into the new rural criteria.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Linh, Vice President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Can Tho City, President of the City Women's Union, affirmed: "Promoting the role in building new rural areas, in the coming time, all levels of the union will continue to innovate activities, promote the movement of women joining hands to build advanced new rural areas, model new rural areas associated with the campaign "Building families of 5 no, 3 clean". With enthusiasm and responsibility, Can Tho women have been contributing to making their homeland increasingly rich, beautiful and civilized".
