Climate change, extreme weather and the complex developments of many diseases on crops and livestock have continued to cause many difficulties for agricultural production activities in Can Tho City. In addition, farmers also face difficulties because the prices of many types of input materials have increased, while the prices of many agricultural products are low. Collective economy in localities develops slowly, the link between agricultural product consumption of cooperatives and enterprises is not tight, and the connection is not sustainable.

However, the city's agricultural production also has favorable conditions for development thanks to the promotion of mechanization and the application of scientific and technological advances in production. In particular, the Department of Agriculture and Environment (DARD) of the city, along with functional agencies and localities in the area, has actively supported farmers and businesses to overcome difficulties to develop production and business. Strengthening linkages along the value chain and synchronously implementing many solutions, from building appropriate production models to synchronously applying technical advances to reduce costs and improve production efficiency. Supporting farmers to standardize production according to quality and safety standards to meet market requirements for favorable output, as well as converting crop and livestock structures to suit local production conditions associated with market demand. With the attention, direction and support of authorities at all levels and the efforts to overcome difficulties of the entire agriculture and environment sector, Can Tho City has a growth rate of total agricultural, forestry and fishery products in the first 9 months of 2025 reaching 3.58% (plan 3.08%), contributing 0.85% percentage point to the overall growth of the city. In the third quarter of 2025 alone, the growth rate reached 4.55%, much higher than the planned 3.48%. The city has 895 OCOP products (One Commune One Product Program), of which 4 products have achieved 5 stars, 242 products have achieved 4 stars and 649 products have achieved 3 stars. Currently, most production targets have reached and exceeded the planned progress, including some targets on crop production that have exceeded the annual plan.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City, the total rice cultivation area is currently 718,461 hectares, exceeding the annual plan by 0.97%. The fruit tree planting area is 102,194 hectares, reaching 100% of the plan. The aquaculture area is 93,708 hectares, reaching 97.1% of the plan. The herd of cows is 62,845, reaching 100% of the plan. The poultry herd is more than 15.9 million, reaching 99.24% of the plan. The herd of pigs is 491,343, the herd of goats is 19,940... The expected output of fresh meat of all kinds in the first 10 months of 2025 is estimated at 143,108 tons, reaching 100% of the plan, an increase of 10.09% over the same period in 2024.
Continue to promote production
In the remaining months of 2025, the city's agricultural sector will continue to focus on organizing production well to achieve and exceed the set targets. Timely resolve difficulties, focus on promoting solutions to improve production efficiency, increase product value and enhance the value chain.
According to Mr. Ngo Thai Chan, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City, the agriculture and environment sector must strive to complete socio-economic targets to contribute to the city's high economic growth scenario as committed by the sector to the City People's Committee. In the fourth quarter of 2025, the agriculture and environment sector strives to achieve a growth rate of the total product of the agriculture, forestry and fishery sector at 4.99%. The city's key production sectors such as cultivation, aquaculture, etc. need to be focused on developing and implementing the proposed plan well.
The demand for many types of agricultural products often increases during the New Year and Lunar New Year every year. This is an opportunity and favorable condition for Can Tho City to increase production activities in the last months of the year.
However, agricultural production in the city still faces many difficulties, requiring authorities at all levels and the agriculture and environment sector to continue to pay attention to supporting farmers and relevant parties to overcome them. In particular, it is necessary to review and grasp the actual production situation, closely monitor the situation of crop cultivation, livestock and poultry farming, aquaculture and seafood exploitation in the city. Farmers proactively respond to adverse weather conditions and epidemics and effectively implement solutions and production models to improve production efficiency, increase product quality and value and stabilize output. Thereby, actively contributing to the completion of the growth target of the whole industry in 2025.
At a recent working session with key officials of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City on the results of the city's agriculture and environment sector's activities in the first 9 months and the direction and tasks for the last months of 2025, Mr. Truong Canh Tuyen, Chairman of the People's Committee of Can Tho City, requested specialized units under the Department of Agriculture and Environment to review and grasp the production area of crops and livestock. At the same time, grasp the development situation of models that bring high efficiency and economic value to promote implementation such as high-tech agricultural models, urban agriculture, high-quality rice production and low emissions... To achieve the set growth target, the Department of Agriculture and Environment and specialized units such as the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, the Department of Fisheries and Fisheries Control need to pay attention to implementing well the solutions to promote production development and review, compile statistics, and grasp data on models, production area, output and value.
Mr. Truong Canh Tuyen requested the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to continue promoting the spirit of internal solidarity, considering this a prerequisite for all success. Despite many difficulties after the merger of 3 provinces and cities, the Agriculture and Environment sector of Can Tho City has strived to overcome difficulties and achieved high growth in recent times, creating favorable conditions to successfully implement the goals and tasks of the whole year 2025.
