The Vietnam Youth Conference on Sustainable Development 2025 has just taken place at the Banking University of Ho Chi Minh City. The conference kicks off the Vietnam Youth Week for Climate Action, responding to climate change.

“Waking up” young people about climate change

Miss Le Nguyen Bao Ngoc cut a ribbon to help students visualize the reality of climate change. This action illustrates the figure of 1,300 billion USD - the fund to respond to climate change. While the current level has only reached 23% (about 300 billion USD).

Miss Intercontinental 2022 Le Nguyen Bao Ngoc sent a message about overcoming the consequences of climate change through the act of cutting a ribbon.

Despite their concern about climate, many young people lack the skills to take action. A 2023 survey by the Institute for Youth Studies found that 70% of young people have difficulty accessing policies and participating in environmental activities.

The VYCEP ( Vietnam Youth Climate Empowerment Pathway) program is implemented based on three pillars. First, awareness: through the VYCEP Tour and school seminars to spread familiar and easy-to-understand climate knowledge. Second, capacity: equipping young people with green skills through the United Nations climate negotiation simulation (UNFCCC), attracting more than 300 young people to apply. Third, participation: bringing the voice of youth into the decision-making process through the climate week in response to the Conference of the Parties (COP).

Young people are not left out of the climate crisis.

Speaking at the discussion session, Mr. Nguyen Vinh Kha (Member of the Secretariat, Chief of Office of the Vietnam Youth Union (HCMC) emphasized: awareness must come before action.

“This is not a story of leaders or organizations, but the responsibility of each young person,” he said. He also believes that the current development of science and technology is an opportunity for young people to participate more actively in environmental action.

The conference also awarded prizes to youth delegates participating in the COP 2025 simulation.

Young delegates shared their experiences from the COP simulation program, affirming that this journey helped them improve their green capacity and sustainable development thinking. Some community models such as Green Saigon, Green Vietnam… were also mentioned as examples of youth self-organizing actions for the environment.

The Vietnam Youth Conference on Sustainable Development 2025 will officially mark the launch of the “Vietnam Youth Climate Action Week” (YCAW Vietnam 2025). This week is designed to equip young people with green skills, raise awareness of climate issues, connect young people to policy-making processes related to Vietnam’s Net Zero 2050 goals and, most importantly, highlight youth-led solutions.
