FC Twente confirmed that Mees Hilgers ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in a recent training session and will have to undergo surgery. This will keep him out for at least 9 months. This is a big shock for both Hilgers and the team, as he has not played a single minute in the 2025-2026 season.
Indonesian national team center back Mees Hilgers with a serious injury will also have to take a long break from playing at the Indonesian national team level.
Hilgers is also determined to recover from his injury and return as a stronger player. He still wants to contribute to the club's cause as well as defend the Indonesian national team in the future.

On his personal page, Hilgers thanked fans for their encouraging messages: "I will work hard every day to come back stronger."
Hilgers was a bright talent of the Twente training academy, debuted in the first team in 2020 and became a mainstay of the defense, attracting the attention of many big clubs such as Feyenoord, PSV or Ajax. However, all transfer negotiations were unsuccessful, the latest being the transfer to Stade Brest (France) in early September.
Previously, the Twente club management also confirmed that the player will not be playing without a contract extension with the team. His current contract is valid until mid-2026, but FC Twente wants to know the future of both parties.
The last time Mees Hilgers played for FC Twente in an official Eredivisie match was in a 0-2 loss to Ajax at the end of last season, on 18-5-2025.
