Camera trap recorded image of individual identified as dog, white color on October 17, 2025.
In response to information posted on social networks and the press about the suspected appearance of white monkeys in Hon Son, the An Giang Provincial Forest Protection Department has urgently deployed measures to check and verify the source of information to serve the management, protection and conservation of endangered and rare wildlife species in the province.
On October 14, the Forest Protection Department coordinated with Bai Bac hamlet, forest owners and relevant agencies to install 3 camera traps at suspected locations and information from people (with coordinates attached), at Ong Rong peak, group 1, Bai Bac hamlet, Kien Hai special zone. At the same time, plaster powder was spread in the suspected area to collect animal footprints, serving as a basis for comparison and species identification.
As a result, during the monitoring period from October 14 to 17, the camera trap recorded: At 5:22 a.m. on October 16, 2 animals appeared, which were identified by the camera trap as dogs with white fur. At 8:33 a.m. on October 17, the camera trap continued to record 2 dogs with similar white fur.
Based on camera traps, recorded images and field inspection results, the An Giang Provincial Forest Protection Department determined that the suspected white monkeys were actually dogs belonging to people living on Hon Son Island.
Head of the An Giang Provincial Forest Protection Department Tran Thanh Duoc said that the unit continues to maintain monitoring using camera traps at installed locations to monitor, collect images and data for management and conservation work and provide additional reports when there are new developments.
The Provincial Forest Protection Department directed the Forest Protection Department of Region III to preside over and coordinate with local authorities and the An Giang Forest Management Board of Region I to organize propaganda and disseminate verified information to people, agencies and organizations in the Hon Son area and Kien Hai special zone. At the same time, publicize accurate information so that people understand the true nature of the incident, avoid spreading and sharing false images or information, affecting the management and protection of wild animals and the image of the local forestry sector.
