Recovering after a disaster
The vegetable garden of Mr. Ho Van Doan’s family (Phuoc Loc commune) is green. Around the house, many planting holes have been filled with manure, waiting to be planted with more fruit trees provided by the livelihood support and poverty reduction funds of national target programs.
The smile returned to the Bh'noong man's face after months of living in fear. Looking at the changes now, Ho Van Doan said he can now sleep soundly in his new house, no longer having to face the terrifying obsession from the landslide. This place is about ten kilometers from Hamlet 6, Ong village, where he used to live.
The new house was built by Ho Van Doan in April 2021, half a year after the disaster, halfway up the slope in village 2 (Phuoc Loc commune). Doan asked for land from his brother, then thanks to the support of 140 million VND from the State, and borrowed a little more, he and his wife were able to rebuild the house. Not far from where Ho Van Doan lives is the house of Ho Van Cay, Doan's brother-in-law.
Ho Van Cay's mother and two children died in the terrible landslide that swept through Ong village in 2020. For a whole month, Doan and his wife, along with Ho Van Cay and his wife, went down the stream to find their mother's body, but lost track. Ho Van Cay's two children were buried near the ghost hill, not far from the village.
Understanding the loss and trauma of the two young families, the government tried every way to help them settle down. Now, both of them live peacefully in the new village. Ho Van Cay and his wife had another child in their new house in village 2.
Those are just two pieces of the puzzle among many people who were left with nothing after the natural disaster that hit Phuoc Son in October 2020.
The highlands seemed to have returned to their starting point... twenty years earlier, with no electricity, roads destroyed, many areas along with people's houses and properties wiped out. Phuoc Kim, Phuoc Loc, Phuoc Thanh, and the highlands of Phuoc Son quietly recovered from the disaster, gradually stabilizing people's lives.

Mr. Luu Huyen Thoai - Chairman of Phuoc Loc Commune People's Committee said that the government has done everything to help people stabilize their housing and gradually restore their fields and crops. Coming out of the chaos and devastation, the government has accompanied the people at all times, directing organizations and unions to gather forces to support rebuilding houses and repairing roads...
“Thanks to the attention and support of resources from the Central, the province, and the district, and the generosity of benefactors who have always turned to the highlands, Phuoc Loc has the conditions to gradually level the ground for the people, and support families who have lost or damaged their houses to have solid and stable housing. We also calculate many options to diversify livelihoods, helping people overcome difficulties and rebuild a new life,” said Mr. Luu Huyen Thoai.
Not only Phuoc Loc, in Phuoc Thanh and Phuoc Kim, many families have also settled down in a "safe zone", no longer worrying about every storm. The problem of settling down is still being solved, with the determination that by 2025 Phuoc Son will complete the removal of more than 1,600 temporary houses, helping people feel secure about tomorrow, the day after...

By mobilizing resources from Resolution No. 12, Resolution No. 23, Resolution No. 13 of the Provincial People's Council, Phuoc Son has promoted the work of stabilizing the population. To support the communes, many units in the province have organized activities to strengthen twinning activities. In particular, Phuoc Son focuses on proposing and implementing livelihood models to help students in difficult circumstances and poor households.

“Local authorities also focus on honoring prestigious people, encouraging and taking advantage of the role of this team at the grassroots level to propagate and mobilize people to properly implement the Party's policies and the State's laws and policies.
The campaigns aim to change the mindset and way of doing things in the community, bringing many positive results, towards sustainable poverty reduction for the people in Phuoc Son mountainous area" - Mr. Ngoc said.
Mr. Le Quang Trung - Chairman of Phuoc Son District People's Committee commented that the efforts of the provincial government along with the active cooperation from the local community have brought about significant innovations in reconstruction and development in Phuoc Son.
It is also a significant mark in the implementation of many important ethnic policies in the area, contributing to improving the quality of life for local people.
“Currently, Phuoc Son has achieved many important goals in economic development and poverty reduction in ethnic minority areas. Notably, ensuring car roads to commune centers and villages, eliminating shifting cultivation and rapidly reducing the poverty rate by 6-7% per year.
In the coming time, the government will continue to work with all levels and sectors to eliminate temporary houses, solve the shortage of production land, strive to reduce the gap in living standards and resolve to no longer have extremely difficult communes in the district," said Mr. Le Quang Trung.
Over the past 5 years (2019 - 2024), more than 1,600 billion VND has been invested to help Phuoc Son district overcome difficulties caused by natural disasters and epidemics, restore and develop life and production. Thanks to that, the transportation system, from district to commune, has been improved, with more than 90% of inter-village roads concreted; 12 communes and towns have national grid electricity; the system of schools and medical stations has gradually been completed, along with investment in irrigation systems and domestic water supply, bringing the rate of population using clean water to 100%...
