On June 2, 1994, the Government issued Decree No. 45-CP on the establishment of Tan Thanh district, Chau Duc district and Ba Ria town in Ba Ria - Vung Tau province. On April 12, 2018, Tan Thanh district was recognized and renamed Phu My town according to Resolution No. 492/NQ-UBTVQH14 of the National Assembly Standing Committee. Then, on November 24, 2020, Phu My town was recognized by the Ministry of Construction as a type III urban area according to Decision 1484/QD-BXD. These are important milestones marking the development of Phu My.
Since its establishment, Phu My town has been identified by Ba Ria-Vung Tau province as a key priority investment area with two main pillars: industry and seaports - logistics. During 30 years of construction and development, with breakthrough policies, creating impacts to awaken the economic potential of the locality. From a purely agricultural district, Tan Thanh has gradually developed and expanded to form the stature of an industrial and seaport city. In the town, there are many key national and provincial transport infrastructure projects: Component project 3 of the Bien Hoa - Vung Tau expressway construction investment project phase 1; Phuoc An bridge project; 991B road project from National Highway 51 to the downstream of Cai Mep port; Long Son - Cai Mep road project; My Xuan - Thi Vai post-port road project (phase 1) ...
The economic driving force of Phu My town is the marine economy, in which there are two important economic sectors that account for the largest proportion in the province, which are industry and seaports. Cai Mep - Thi Vai port cluster currently has 35 ports, of which 22 have been put into operation with a capacity of 117.8 million tons/year. Of which, Cai Mep port in Cai Mep - Thi Vai port cluster is ranked 12th among the 370 best container ports in the world; there are 9/15 industrial parks concentrated in Phu My town, with the presence of many large domestic and foreign corporations.
In addition, Phu My has also built Phu My Dry Port with a land area of about 37.84 hectares including 6 wharves with a total length of up to 600m in phase 1 of Phu My 3 Specialized Industrial Park with a system of warehouses, empty container depots... with a total investment of 2,990 billion VND. This is the first dry port in Ba Ria - Vung Tau province and the 3rd dry port in the Southeast region, with a full system of wharf infrastructure, warehouses, empty container depots, modern exploitation equipment... providing comprehensive, all-inclusive, multimodal logistics solutions.

In 2023, FDI attraction in Phu My town accounted for nearly 90% of the province's total capital (1.23/1.38 billion USD), in the first 7 months of 2024 alone, it accounted for nearly 80% of the province's total capital (1.39/1.75 billion USD), and accumulated to the end of July 2024, it accounted for more than 50% of the province's total capital (17/33 billion USD).
Based on its potential and comparative advantages, Phu My has all the conditions to develop into a marine economic center, with large-scale seaport - industrial - logistics complexes, the foundation of a marine urban area with high international competitiveness.
According to Chairman of the People's Committee of Ba Ria-Vung Tau province Nguyen Van Tho, Resolution No. 24-NQ/TW, dated October 7, 2022 of the Politburo on "Socio-economic development and ensuring national defense and security in the Southeast region to 2030, with a vision to 2045"; Resolution 154/NQ-CP of the Government; Southeast region planning for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050 and Ba Ria - Vung Tau province planning for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050 and the Phu My town master plan have identified Phu My town to become a port - industrial - logistics service city, an important gateway in economic exchange of the Region, Southeast Asia and the world; is one of the important economic centers of the province and the Southern key economic region; By 2025, Phu My town will become a city and urban area of type II. These are important legal bases, premises and orientations for Phu My to focus on leadership and development in the coming time.
