The report comes from PerfectRec, which aggregates data from more than 600,000 user-generated Google reviews for the iPhone 14 and other iPhone models. While the data may contain some false positives, the large sample size should still provide a picture of how iPhone users feel.
While iPhone sales remain strong, new data shows a significant drop in iPhone satisfaction. In the second quarter, Apple cited a study from 451 Research that found that family satisfaction with the iPhone 14 was 99%. But that contradicts the user-generated reviews collected by PerfectRec.
The study looked at iPhone models released from 2011 to 2022 and charted the percentage of all user-generated reviews that were 5 stars. The base iPhone model is typically Apple's best-selling model in each generation and receives the most user reviews online. Over this time period, the 5-star review rate for the base iPhone has steadily increased from 65% for the iPhone 5 to 80% for the iPhone 13.
iPhone 14 sees significant drop in satisfaction compared to all generations since iPhone 4
The iPhone 14 has dropped 8 points from its all-time high of 80% for the iPhone 13, with 72% of users giving it 5 stars. The iPhone 14 Pro has a higher rating of 76%, but it has also dropped 8% from the iPhone 13 Pro (84%). The iPhone 14 Pro Max, meanwhile, has dropped 6% from the 13 Pro Max, from 86% to 80%.
The higher ratings from the Pro models are consistent with recent research that found the high-end iPhones are outselling the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus. The research also charted every model since the iPhone 4, with the 13 Pro max peaking at 86%, while the iPhone 5C was at 64%.
Explaining the decline in satisfaction with the iPhone 14, PerfectRec said that the speed of improvement of this model does not match customer expectations.
