Immediately after the announcement of the first round of admission scores, more than 100 universities across the country announced to continue with additional admissions with a total of more than 28,000 positions. However, most of the schools said that the situation of additional admissions is very poor.
Only a few dozen candidates registered
More than three weeks ago, Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry announced additional admissions for full-time university students in 2024 at the Quang Ngai branch with 205 quotas for 6 majors. The school will consider admissions in two ways: considering the 2024 high school graduation exam scores (17 points) and considering the 12th grade transcript (19 points).
But by September 13, only about 30 candidates had registered for additional admission.
Similarly, Dr. Mai Hai Chau, deputy director of the University of Forestry (branch in Dong Nai province), said: "Immediately after announcing the first round of benchmark scores, the school announced additional admissions for many majors with 200 quotas, but so far only about 50 candidates have registered, reaching about 30%."
Ho Chi Minh City Open University also announced to receive additional applications for admission to 6 regular university majors with degrees granted by the university (150 quotas) and 13 international joint programs with degrees granted by partners. Up to now, the school has not yet recruited enough students.
Private universities in Ho Chi Minh City all said that the additional enrollment situation is very difficult, most of them have not met this year's enrollment target.
According to MSc. Truong Thi Ngoc Bich, Director of the Information and Communication Center of the University of Economics and Finance, Ho Chi Minh City, the school announced an additional enrollment of 600 students for all majors until September 15. However, so far, the number of applications submitted is only about 30%.
"The school's additional recruitment situation this year is still not enough to meet the quota. We will monitor it until the end of the recruitment period," said Ms. Bich.
Nguyen Tat Thanh University is recruiting about 1,500 additional students for 63 majors according to three methods.
"After the additional admission process ended, the school received about 1,000 applications. Up to now, the school has not yet met its enrollment target. This year's admission process is more difficult than previous years," said Dr. Tran Ai Cam, the school's principal.
Out of recruitment sources
Van Lang University also reserved 1,500 spots for the additional review this year. As of September 10, the school had received 2,700 applications.
"Up to now, nearly 1,000 additional candidates have been admitted to school. In our opinion, at this point, the recruitment source has been exhausted. If successful candidates want to enroll in the major or school they like, they have already made their decision. Those who do not study for any reason do not continue to register.
In short, at this point there is no more source for additional recruitment, Van Lang University has also stopped accepting additional applications" - Dr. Vo Van Tuan, permanent vice principal of the school, said.
According to Dr. Le Xuan Truong, Vice Principal of Ho Chi Minh City Open University, after the additional admission period ended, the school recruited about 95% of its target.
At the same time, he also commented that with universities recruiting students using many methods of admission and virtual filtering, it is difficult for candidates who really want to enter university to fall out of the school's admission system. Therefore, there are not many additional recruitment sources left.
"Currently, students have many options after high school. Especially in the context of high tuition fees and many options, many candidates will consider between choosing to go to university, college, vocational training or going to work abroad.
Moreover, the majors that are being recruited are mostly unattractive. This explains why candidates do not continue to register for additional admission or even pass the entrance exam but refuse to enroll," said Mr. Truong.
Meanwhile, Dr. Nguyen Trung Nhan, head of the training department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry, said that nationwide there are more than 122,000 candidates who passed the entrance exam but did not confirm their admission in the first round. Therefore, in theory, the additional recruitment source of universities is still available because in reality, many candidates have not passed the first round.
"However, it is very possible that because students do not like to study majors that are not suitable for them, they do not register for additional admission. Besides, for many years, university branches in the province have always had difficulty recruiting, this is probably because students do not like to study at training facilities in the province or partly because they choose another path," Mr. Nhan commented.
According to Mr. Nhan, although the Quang Ngai branch has not yet recruited enough students, the school has decided not to consider additional recruitment.
The number of schools with additional admissions is not much.
After the first additional admission round, schools with remaining enrollment quotas can continue to conduct additional admission rounds until December 2024.
Candidates who need to apply for additional admission rounds of schools need to follow the admission plan posted on the school's admission information page (if the school applies for additional admission).
However, the number of schools continuing to consider additional admissions will not be many.
More than 551,000 candidates confirmed admission
According to the Ministry of Education and Training, at the end of the first round of university admission confirmation, 551,497 candidates confirmed their admission online on the system, reaching 81.87% of the number of candidates admitted in the first round on the system. This year's admission rate is higher than last year (80.34%).
In 2024, the total number of candidates registering for university admission is more than 733,000, of which 673,586 candidates were admitted in the first round of the system. Thus, there are about 122,107 candidates who did not confirm their admission, accounting for 18.13% of the total number of candidates admitted in the first round.
