The first hearing in the 90 million won (about $68,000) damages lawsuit filed by BTS members V and Jungkook against the operator of the YouTube channel "Taldeok Camp" will take place today - August 23, Korean time.
The first hearing will be held by presiding judge Kwan Hyeong Lee of the Seoul Western District Civil Court, Division 12. The lawsuit was filed by BigHit Music, the agency representing BTS, based on claims of defamation and other damages caused by the defendant's actions.
In March, BTS members V and Jungkook filed a lawsuit, demanding 90 million won in damages. BigHit Music confirmed on March 16 that they had indeed filed the lawsuit.
Previously, on June 28, Korean time, BigHit Music announced: “We filed a criminal complaint against 'Deduction Asylum' in 2022 for defamation and obstruction of business, but the investigation was temporarily stopped.
However, we proactively requested the investigation to continue after securing the operator's personal information, leading to the current ongoing investigation. Earlier this year, we also filed a civil lawsuit for defamation and other illegal activities, and a trial will take place soon.”
"Taldeok Camp" - YouTube users who create and distribute sensational content to gain views - produced and distributed videos spreading baseless rumors about BTS members for months in 2021.
On December 29, 2021, BTS's management company filed an additional lawsuit against netizens who posted defamatory, insulting, sexually harassing, false, and malicious content about BTS. They stated, "We are taking strong legal action against those who attack the character of our artists and spread malicious rumors without any basis. We are taking all possible legal measures, both criminal and civil, against those who continue to engage in such behavior on platforms such as YouTube."
BTS' management agency further emphasized: "We will pursue compensation at the highest level, ensuring that these offenders are held accountable both criminally and civilly, making it clear that they cannot escape responsibility for their actions. To prevent the repetition of malicious acts, we will continue to take strict measures against wrongdoers, without compromise or leniency."
