New look for foreign films
Thai movie 404 Run Now, when it was released in Vietnam in December last year, topped the domestic box office revenue chart for many consecutive days (according to reference data from Box Office Vietnam). In addition to the humorous script, the voices of Le Duong Bao Lam, La Thanh and Diep Bao Ngoc... are said to help the work become more intimate and charming. Continuing his success, Le Duong Bao Lam recently continued to dub the Korean movie Extremely Funny Assassin . Combined with Le Khanh and La Thanh, the actor from Dong Nai is said to create a unique color for Lee Yi-kyung's role.

Khang Media also applied the new look for foreign films when bringing Tre trau khong nguoi tro dau, Rider: Giao hang cho ma, Yeu vi tien chan vi tinh… to Vietnam. A series of famous artists such as People's Artist Hong Van, Hong Dao, actors Quoc Truong, Le Loc, Tuan Dung, Vo Tan Phat… were invited to contribute their voices to these projects, bringing new experiences not only to the audience but also to the artists.
As a veteran in the theater, television and cinema fields, dubbing the role of Pie's mother in the Thai film Rider: Delivering goods to ghosts (released in theaters in February 2025) was a new and interesting experience for People's Artist Hong Van. After this journey, People's Artist Hong Van admitted: "Dubbing for foreign films seems easy but in fact it is not easy at all". Vo Tan Phat took on the role of dubbing the male lead, expressing the character's "arrogant" personality.
Or with the Hong Kong film Love for Money, Crazy for Love (premiered on March 21), the harmonious combination of Quoc Truong and Hong Dao dubbing the two main actors also left an impression on viewers. Quoc Truong said that he had to draw on his experience from his previous roles, combined with the guidance of voice director Khanh Ai to be able to do well in this character.
"This was an interesting and new experience that helped me realize that being a voice actor is very hard, no less than being a real actor outside the studio. During the work, the director advised me to speak more slowly. I myself am from the West, I usually speak quickly, so the director advised me to stay calm and focus on pronouncing correctly. Thanks to the support of the voice director, I was able to complete this role," Quoc Truong shared more.
Most recently, the Thai film My Dear Bear (released on April 4) attracted attention when it gathered a cast of dubbing actors including Hoai Linh, Minh Du, Mie, Lac Hoang Long... This shows that creating dubbing versions for foreign films is being focused on and bringing positive changes in terms of audience effect and revenue.
Difficult but easy
In recent years, the selection of foreign films with dubbed versions has gradually expanded. If before, dubbed works made many people afraid of interrupting the emotional flow, now, the distributor shows caution in sticking to the original and has moderate creativity, typically the use of popular Vietnamese words to create a sense of closeness for the audience.

According to director Vu Thanh Vinh (representative of the unit that brought films such as Rider: Delivering goods to ghosts or Love for money, crazy for love to Vietnam), currently, the Vietnamese audience's support for projects with similar cultural features, which are brought back to Vietnam to be dubbed, is increasingly widespread. However, to gain the trust of viewers, he and his colleagues also have to focus on dubbing the film. "In addition to sticking to the content, there are lines that we choose to include popular sayings or invite artists who are suitable for the story and the voice of the actors. That creates popularity and sales from there are also more positive", he shared.
Director Vu Thanh Vinh added that meticulousness is especially important when dubbing a foreign work. According to him, translating to ensure that it is consistent with the story and matches the character's mouth movements is a difficult problem, but if solved, it will create something new, helping the film reach the audience more closely.
"The actors give the characters new, smooth emotions. That proves that if invested in seriously, dubbing foreign films is a good trend, bringing new experiences to movie audiences."
This option costs the distributor more money, time and effort, but in return, if the actor does his role well, it will help the work attract more viewers. Not to mention, the name of the actor participating in the dubbing is also considered a factor that attracts audiences to the theater to watch.
According to artist Hong Dao, inviting famous artists to dub foreign films is an interesting form. "I have been abroad for quite a while, inviting famous actors to dub animated films is very important. Because when people admire that actor, it will help the film become more popular," Hong Dao shared.
Further assessing the market, director Vu Thanh Vinh emphasized: "Currently, there are still audiences who are loyal to subtitles, wanting to fully enjoy the emotions from the sound, dialogue... However, the customer base for watching dubbed movies tends to increase."
