Delegates perform the ribbon-cutting ceremony to export the first batch of low-emission Vietnamese green rice to the Japanese market.

This event marks the rice products from the Project "Sustainable development of 1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice cultivation associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta by 2030" (abbreviated as the 1 million hectares of rice project) with the brand name "Green Vietnamese low-emission rice" being exported to foreign markets.

"Low emission" rice costs $820/ton

That is the information about the unit price of Japonica rice certified as "Low emission green Vietnamese rice" exported by Trung An Company to Japan shared by Mr. Pham Thai Binh, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Trung An High-tech Agriculture Joint Stock Company.

From 2020 to present, Trung An Company has cooperated with Murase Group to grow high-quality rice that meets Japanese standards in the Mekong Delta region (with many rice varieties imported from Japan) according to a closed process from field to table.

In 2024 and 2025, the two sides will continue to upgrade cooperation in applying emission reduction criteria to rice cultivation according to the technical process of the 1 million hectare rice project with the aim of improving rice quality along with environmental friendliness standards. At the same time, Trung An Company also cooperates with the Netherlands Development Organization in Vietnam (SNV in Vietnam) to implement the Project on Transforming the Rice Value Chain to Respond to Climate Change and Sustainable Development in the Mekong Delta (TRVC Project) to apply emission reduction criteria to rice cultivation.

A representative of Trung An Company said that through the two crops of 2024 and 2025, the results achieved were very positive. All rice production in the project area met the standards certified by the Vietnam Rice Industry Association as Low Emission Green Vietnamese Rice.

In the trend of using clean, high-quality, environmentally friendly rice, which is increasing in many countries around the world , the Trung An - Murase joint venture is planning to continue to coordinate to increase the area of safe, low-emission rice cultivation to increase the output of qualified rice, meeting the import needs of many Japanese traders who need to import low-emission rice from the company.

In addition, the Trung An - Murase joint venture also plans to build a factory to process Japanese-standard instant rice products with low emissions to serve Vietnamese consumers and export to Japan and other countries around the world.

Mr. Pham Thai Binh added that after 500 tons of Japonica rice were exported to Japan today, Trung An Company plans to export about 200 tons of ST25 rice certified as "Low-emission Vietnamese Green Rice" to Australia at a price of nearly 1,200 USD/ton.

A representative of Trung An Company also said that in 2025, it is expected that about 400,000 tons of rice (Japonica, ST25) certified as "Low-emission Vietnamese Green Rice" will be exported abroad, mainly to the Japanese market.

"When exporting rice to the Japanese market, it is necessary to comply with the criteria in the 1 million hectare rice project because the Japanese are very concerned about food safety, especially pesticide residues in rice. If the Vietnamese rice industry properly implements the criteria and cultivation processes prescribed by the 1 million hectare rice project, Vietnamese rice will certainly be able to enter the Japanese market and other countries," a representative of Trung An Company shared his experience.

Trung An Company is one of the units that has responded to the implementation of the 1 million hectare rice project from the very beginning and is also a unit that has volunteered to cooperate with raw material areas and cooperatives to create a rice value chain in the Mekong Delta. Trung An Company commits to participating in the implementation of the 1 million hectare rice project by 2030 with an area of 100,000 hectares as committed.

Reaching the heights of Vietnamese rice

According to Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Tran Thanh Nam, today's rice export batch is the result of the cooperation of farmers, cooperatives, businesses and agricultural officials in localities and provinces who have persistently implemented the techniques and criteria of the 1 million hectare rice project over the past time.

Deputy Minister Tran Thanh Nam commented that the road ahead still has many difficulties, but this is the belief of the parties involved, especially the change in thinking of farmers in sustainable rice production to increase value.

"The first batch of rice exported to Japan demonstrates the expansion of Vietnamese rice to the world, not only ensuring quality but also ensuring environmental standards. This is a new step forward for the Vietnamese rice industry in general and the Mekong Delta in particular in the coming time; at the same time, it is an opportunity to start orienting the rice production method of the Mekong Delta to a new stage, overcoming the problem of good harvest but low price, overcoming the quality of rice and rice brand", Mr. Nam assessed.

The 1 million hectare rice project has successfully implemented many pilot models in 2024. From 2025, the project will enter the expansion phase in production. Along with the increasingly widespread high-quality low-emission rice fields, the beginning of the "Low-emission Green Vietnamese Rice" brand will gradually move towards developing a certification label and national brand of low-carbon Vietnamese Rice according to the goals of the 1 million hectare project.

The low-emission Green Viet Rice brand aims to promptly serve the 1 million hectare rice project. Vietrisa has completed the development and promulgated the Regulations on the use of the “Low-emission Green Viet Rice” brand on April 16, 2025.

After issuing the regulations on the use of the trademark, Vietrisa, in collaboration with the Project on Transforming the Rice Value Chain to Respond to Climate Change and Sustainable Development in the Mekong Delta (TRVC Project), granted the Certificate of Right to Use the “Low Emission Green Vietnamese Rice” Brand to 7 enterprises (including Trung An Company) with a total volume of 19,200 tons of rice. Trung An Company cooperated with Murase Group (Japan) - the first enterprise to export a batch of goods with the “Low Emission Green Vietnamese Rice” brand to the Japanese market.

The label “Low emission green Vietnamese rice” is granted by Vietrisa to rice products produced according to the Technical Process of the 1 million hectare Project, confirmed by local authorities, agricultural sector (commune level) or specialized international organizations, ensuring origin (place of rice production, rice variety name, crop season).

The first shipment of "Low-emission Vietnamese Green Rice" exported to the Japanese market is a testament to the continuous efforts and striving of the government, businesses, organizations, and industry associations for a clean Vietnamese agricultural product industry, for the benefit of human health, and contributing to increasing export turnover, bringing great and sustainable benefits.
