Statistics from the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association show that in 2023, China imported nearly 493,000 tons of durian from Vietnam, worth 2.1 billion USD, an increase of 1,107% in volume and 1,035.8% in value compared to 2022.
Vietnam's durian market share in China's total imports increased sharply to 34.6%. The average price of imported durian from Vietnam reached more than 4,332 USD/ton.
Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen - General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, by 2025, the demand for durian in the Chinese market could reach 20 billion USD and the world's 28.6 billion USD. Adding up all durian exporting countries in Southeast Asia is still not enough to meet the demand of this market. Therefore, there is still a lot of room for Vietnam to boost exports of this product to China. In particular, this year, China will open the door to frozen durian from Vietnam, so the export turnover of this product could reach about 3.5 billion USD.
According to data from the General Department of Vietnam Customs, fruit and vegetable exports to China increased sharply in January 2024, reaching 306 million USD, up 20.1% compared to December 2023 and up 103.9% compared to January 2023.
Export activities of the fruit and vegetable industry have many positive signs, because the export value of fruit and vegetable products to the Chinese market accounts for 62.4% of the total export value of fruit and vegetable products in January 2024.
Agricultural experts say: Currently, durian is on the rise because the Chinese market needs large quantities of goods. Farmers should not follow the trend of expanding the area of cultivation but should pay attention and invest in technology to achieve high quality products. Farmers should also invest in growing durian off-season when conditions permit and produce good quality to serve the domestic and export markets.
Vietnam’s durian output is still very modest compared to Thailand’s because our country does not have many years of experience in this field. In Thailand, there is no durian in January and February, which is an opportunity for Vietnam to gain a competitive advantage. If we do the opposite season, Vietnam can take advantage of the export opportunity during the months when Thailand does not have durian.
Vietnam's durian harvest season is from April to October, but farmers in the Mekong Delta harvest from November to March. This is the golden time for durian exports to China.
