Currently in Tien Giang , traders are buying Ri6 durian at prices ranging from 135,000 to 140,000 VND/kg, an increase of about 30% compared to last month. With an average durian yield of 20 to 25 tons/ha, farmers harvesting durian at the right time now, after deducting costs, can earn a profit of at least several billion VND per hectare.
Currently, farmers in durian-growing areas of Tien Giang province are beginning to harvest the off-season durian crop, which is expected to last until the upcoming Lunar New Year. Durian prices are also rising sharply at this time.

Mr. Nguyen Van Hieu, who grows 2,000 m² of durian in Cam Son commune, Cai Lay district (Tien Giang province), said that although durian prices are high, this year's off-season crop has been affected by complex weather and hydrological conditions. The dry season has seen severe droughts, while the rainy season has been marked by prolonged storms. As a result, many farmers have suffered crop failures because the trees did not flower, or if they did, it was very difficult for them to bear fruit, leading to a significant decrease in yield.
Accordingly, typically around April or May each year, farmers begin treating durian trees to induce staggered flowering, and the durian orchards will be ready for harvest from November onwards. At this time, durian prices are high, and farmers reap substantial profits.
Furthermore, due to the drought during the recent dry season, which depleted the durian orchards, many households decided to skip the harvest and instead focus on recovery and care to prepare for the 2025 season.
Low and limited supply, coupled with high domestic and export market demand, is one of the reasons for the sharp increase in durian prices during the off-season in Tien Giang province.
Off-season durian harvest in Cai Lay district, Tien Giang province. The price of Ri6 durian in Tien Giang is rising sharply from 135,000 to 145,000 VND/kg, bringing durian farmers billions of VND per hectare in profit. Therefore, many people liken durian farming to growing a "billion-dollar crop".
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tien Giang province, durian is one of the specialty fruits with high economic value and an important agricultural export product of the locality.
The entire province has over 22,000 hectares of durian, concentrated in the flood-controlled areas of the western districts and towns: Cai Lay district, Cai Be district, Cai Lay town, Chau Thanh district, etc., with an annual production of approximately 440,000 tons of fruit.
To further develop the strengths of specialty crops, the locality focuses on transferring intensive farming techniques and encouraging farmers to apply scientific methods comprehensively to achieve high yields and production.
Specifically, managing durian flowering to stagger the harvest time allows for off-season harvesting, avoiding peak harvesting during the main season to reduce the risk of oversupply, market glut, and price drops.
At the same time, in an effort to capitalize on the opportunity of exporting durian officially to China and other international markets, Tien Giang province is focusing on developing planting area codes and packaging facility codes to facilitate the official export of durian to China and other countries.
According to Mr. Tran Hoang Nhat Nam, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tien Giang province, the entire province currently has 409 fruit-growing areas for export with a total area of over 25,000 hectares, including 155 durian growing areas with a total area of nearly 7,000 hectares, creating agricultural raw material areas that are officially licensed for export to China.
Thanks to favorable durian exports and stable market demand, localities in the upstream flood control areas of Tien Giang province, which have established large-scale concentrated durian cultivation zones, are becoming increasingly prosperous and contributing to successful rural development.
For example, Cai Lay district, Cai Lay town, and Cai Be district, located in the western flood control zone, have been recognized as having completed the goals of building new rural areas.
In particular, Long Khanh commune (Cai Lay town) and Cam Son commune (Cai Lay district, Tien Giang province) also successfully launched their model new rural communes in January 2024.
These are localities that, thanks to the shift towards "living with floods," have developed specialized durian farming areas producing large quantities of commercial produce, making a significant contribution to promoting socio-economic development and innovation in agriculture, farmers, and rural areas in the region.
