According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dong Thap, the province is strengthening propaganda and changing the awareness of farmers and businesses about the requirements of clean farming, while promoting the transfer of intensive farming techniques; in which, handling off-season fruit continues to be considered an important solution to avoid the situation of massive harvest, oversupply and price drop like previous years. In addition, the province focuses on building growing area codes and packaging facility codes, aiming to expand official exports to markets with high standards.

As one of the durian “capitals” of the Mekong Delta, Dong Thap owns a large and increasingly standardized raw material area. Therefore, Dong Thap province is actively encouraging durian farmers to switch to organic farming, while coordinating to establish production and consumption chains. Thereby, helping farmers improve fruit quality, increase competitiveness and businesses have standard raw material areas to supply the domestic market and export.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dong Thap, in order to expand the area of organic durian cultivation, in the coming time, the province will strengthen coordination and propaganda to raise awareness of producers, businesses and the community. In addition, to further promote the strengths of durian specialty crops, local authorities will promote the transfer of intensive durian cultivation techniques to farmers. In particular, it is necessary to spread the crop to harvest in the off-season of the year, avoiding harvesting in the main season to reduce the risk of a bumper crop and falling prices. At the same time, it is necessary to strengthen the development of growing area codes and packaging facility codes to serve the official export of durian to international markets.

Dong Thap province is a locality with a large durian material area in the Mekong Delta. In recent times, durian trees have been considered a “billionaire” tree because of their high economic efficiency due to export. If the selling price is favorable, this fruit tree can yield about 1 billion VND/year/ha.

Mr. Duong Van Day, the “durian billionaire” who cultivates 2.7 hectares of durian in Ngu Hiep commune, Dong Thap province, said that about 30 years ago, like many others, his family planted many types of trees before trying to grow durian. Since planting this fruit tree, his family and local gardeners have become more prosperous.

According to Mr. Duong Van Day, he has just sold 10 tons of off-season durian to traders for a profit of more than 500 million VND. Currently, the price of Ri 6 durian sold in bulk is "slowing down", only at 55,000-58,000 VND/kg. In particular, Monthong durian (Thai) is increasing, currently at 100,000 VND/kg.

This year, gardeners who grow durians that produce fruit in the off-season have encountered difficulties due to erratic weather and heavy rain, resulting in reduced productivity. Many durian gardens have been attacked by fungi, causing fruit to rot while they are in the fruiting stage, with a high loss rate, Mr. Duong Van Day shared.

Mr. Vo Tan Loi, Chairman of the Dong Thap Province Durian Association, emphasized: In 2025, Dong Thap province recorded strong development of the durian industry. Export growing area codes to China, Japan, the EU and some potential markets continued to be maintained and expanded, contributing to enhancing the value and reputation of the province's products. Notably, durian production and export activities continue to bring great economic benefits to farmers and businesses, contributing to increasing income and shifting the province's agricultural structure towards sustainability.

In the first 10 months of 2025 alone, businesses in the province exported 50,987 tons of durian, mainly to the Chinese market, earning more than 170.27 million USD. The export value continued to increase compared to the same period in 2024, demonstrating the prestige and quality of the province's durian products in the international market.

The report of the Durian Association of Dong Thap province clearly stated: The whole province currently has 34,361 hectares of durian; of which, there are 377 growing areas with codes, corresponding to 489 codes with an area of 14,843.93 hectares, accounting for 43.2% of the total growing area of the whole province. Particularly, the export growing area codes are 393 codes, with an area of 14,011.7 hectares, including: 350 export codes to the Chinese market; 43 export codes to Japan, EU, Russia and output serving the domestic market.

The assessment of the Dong Thap Province Durian Association also shows that farmers are increasingly aware of the importance of registering growing area codes, complying with technical processes and requirements of importing countries. In addition, businesses are actively investing in raw material areas, equipment, and packaging facilities that meet export standards.

In particular, the Dong Thap Province Durian Association has also stepped up propaganda and technical guidance for members and businesses, contributing to limiting the fraud of growing area codes and packaging facilities. Thanks to that, the situation of violating regulations on growing area codes and packaging facilities has been basically overcome, ensuring transparency and reputation for the province's durian brand.

Mr. Vo Tan Loi, Chairman of the Dong Thap Province Durian Association, said: 2025 is a year that marks the strong development of the durian industry in Dong Thap Province, in terms of area, quality and export value. However, for sustainable development, it is necessary to continue to improve the production, consumption and traceability chains, and raise awareness of clean, safe and responsible production.

However, to improve the efficiency of durian production in the coming time, the Dong Thap Durian Association proposes to continue expanding the area of growing areas that meet export standards; increase technical training for farmers, ensuring that products meet food safety requirements and international standards. Along with that, promote value chain linkages between farmers, cooperatives, and enterprises, towards a sustainable production, processing, and export model. At the same time, build a strategy to promote the brand "Dong Thap Durian", a key factor to create long-term advantages in the domestic market and reach out to the international market.
