Yen Bai aims for sustainable livestock farming

Taking advantage of favorable natural conditions and long-standing production traditions, in recent years, Yen Bai province has made many strong strides in developing large-scale, commodity-oriented livestock farming. This is not only a suitable direction for mountainous areas but also an important driving force to help many households escape poverty and gradually become rich sustainably.

On the hilly forest land of Na Hien village, Truc Lau commune, Luc Yen district, Mr. Vu Duc Phan - one of the households with many years of experience in raising cattle has made a turning point. Previously, he raised buffaloes in the form of grazing, which was hard work and not very effective. Now, thanks to investing in barns, switching to confinement combined with applying scientific advances in raising cattle, the herd is stable with about 20 buffaloes and cows, helping the family economy to be better. Mr. Phan shared: "Free-range grazing is very labor-intensive and susceptible to disease. Now, confinement is more proactive, less labor-intensive and more effective. The price of buffaloes and cows sometimes decreases, but my livestock is always stable, no worries about output".

Or like Mr. Nguyen Quang Vien's household in Loong Tra village, Minh Xuan commune, with a model of raising buffaloes and cows in the direction of fattening with a scale of 10 or more, also achieved high economic efficiency. Mr. Vien said: "With support for livestock development from Resolution 69 of the Provincial People's Council and having a large garden, I mobilized my wife and children to grow grass, rebuild barns, and expand the confinement area in the direction of semi-grazing".

In recent years, households in Luc Yen district have actively transformed livestock farming from small-scale, fragmented to concentrated, helping the local livestock herd to develop strongly. Currently, the total main livestock herd of Luc Yen has reached 121,850 heads; of which: 17,730 buffaloes, 1,820 cows, over 102,300 pigs; the total output of fresh meat of all kinds has reached more than 3,242 tons, contributing significantly to promoting economic development and increasing income for people.

Pig farming is one of the strengths of Yen Bai province with a total herd of over 102,300 pigs.

In 2025, Yen Bai aims to have a total herd of 950,000 main livestock, with meat output reaching 83,000 tons, and livestock production value accounting for 30% of the agricultural - forestry - fishery structure. To achieve the above goals and develop the large-scale livestock industry sustainably, becoming a pillar of the rural economy, Yen Bai province has synchronously implemented key solutions such as: promoting the planning of concentrated buffalo and cow breeding areas according to locality, suitable for ecological conditions, with a system of clean barns, associated with environmental protection measures. Each locality needs to identify suitable livestock breeds to effectively exploit existing advantages.

Mr. Nguyen Duc Dien - Deputy Director of the Provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment said: "The province continues to effectively implement Resolution 69 of the Provincial People's Council and current support policies on high-quality seeds, input materials, preferential loans; in particular, will increase training courses, technical guidance on care, disease prevention, and transfer of science and technology suitable for each target group such as poor households, ethnic minorities...".

Yen Bai province encourages people to apply digital technology to livestock management, traceability, and promote products through e-commerce. Promote the use of biotechnology in waste treatment, aiming for green, clean, and effective livestock farming.

Along with that, the province also encourages the establishment of cooperatives and livestock cooperatives associated with enterprises that consume products, supply animal feed, breeds and veterinary services. Organizing production according to the value chain will help people reduce risks, stabilize output and increase profits. In particular, sustainable livestock farming requires strict disease control. Therefore, localities need to organize regular vaccination, manage transportation and slaughter according to regulations.

At the same time, strengthen the capacity of the grassroots veterinary team to promptly detect and handle outbreaks. Encourage people to apply digital technology to livestock management, trace origin, promote products via e-commerce; promote the use of biotechnology in waste treatment, towards green, clean, and effective livestock farming.

The province continues to invest in research and selection of buffalo and cow breeds suitable to local conditions, with high productivity and good resistance. On the other hand, it guides people to use agricultural by-products such as straw and corn stalks as animal feed, in order to reduce costs and make the most of local resources.

With clear orientation, drastic participation of authorities at all levels and continuous efforts of people, the livestock industry in Yen Bai province is facing many great opportunities for sustainable development, contributing to increasing income, improving people's lives and transforming the agricultural economic structure more comprehensively.
