For videos with lots of comments, YouTube will use artificial intelligence (AI) to sort them by topic to facilitate conversations.
Google says content authors can use these comment summaries to join discussions or get inspiration for new content.
Topics are taken from posted comments, do not use moderated comments or include banned keywords. The test is being done on mobile, so users who get to try it will see a star icon on some English videos.
YouTube also uses conversational AI to provide answers to questions about the videos users are watching. It will provide background information and suggest related content without interrupting the video playback. For academic videos, the AI will ask questions and provide feedback to encourage deeper understanding.
Conversational AI is available to a small number of users for a subset of videos. Those with access also see a star icon.
YouTube Premium subscribers can opt in to try the new features, as they get access to the experimental features as part of their plan. Comment threads will be available to paid members starting today, with conversational AI coming in the coming weeks.
Google emphasizes that the AI features are experimental and may not always work, which is why they are only available to a small number of users so Google can gather feedback.
