Heavy rains washed away a hydroelectric project under construction on the Hewa River in Sankhuwasabha district, eastern Nepal, leaving 16 workers missing, said Bimal Paudel, a government official.

“One body has been recovered while police are searching for the missing labourers,” he said. Officials said nine people were also missing in flash floods and landslides in the neighbouring districts of Taplejung and Panchthar, which border India.
Gaurav Dhakal in Panchthar district said overnight rains damaged two bridges on the Mechi highway, cutting off the route to remote Taplejung district, where four people were reported missing.
Officials said heavy rains had hampered rescuers’ access to the hilly village of Sidingwa, where at least 20 homes were at risk of being washed away. The annual rains typically begin in mid-June and last until September in Nepal.
Every year, hundreds of people die or go missing in floods that inundate villages, crops and damage infrastructure in mountainous areas of Nepal, a country sandwiched between China and India.
