Alopecia areata is an organ-specific autoimmune disease that occurs when the immune system attacks hair follicles, leading to patchy hair loss, commonly seen in young people and children. Dr. Ha said the disease can progress to hair loss of the entire scalp or body, seriously affecting the quality of life.

Causes of hair loss in young people
According to Dr. Ha, for young people, hair loss is often related to factors such as an unreasonable diet, malnutrition, and an irregular lifestyle. In addition, psychological stress also plays an important role in stimulating hair loss.
One of the habits to watch out for is hair pulling, which often occurs in children aged 8-15. The pressure of studying, living, and social relationships can cause psychological stress, leading to hair pulling to relieve stress.
"Although hair loss is not fatal, it will greatly affect the quality of life and can seriously affect the patient's psychology, even causing depression. Therefore, treatment must combine both psychological treatment and dermatologist treatment," said the dermatologist.
Currently, the Department of Stem Cell Research and Application is managing nearly 1,000 patients with alopecia areata, many of whom have severe cases. The treatments used include topical medications, traditional systemic medications, and Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors — a new treatment. The hospital also combines procedures such as corticosteroid injections, microneedling, and Intracel to optimize treatment effectiveness.

Dr. Ha advises that if you experience hair loss, you should go to a specialist facility for timely examination and treatment, avoiding the situation of following unscientific treatment methods, which will waste money without achieving results.
While hair loss treatment is becoming a growing concern for many people, Associate Professor, Dr. Le Huu Doanh - Director of the Central Dermatology Hospital, also advised that when experiencing hair loss, patients need to find the right cause to have the appropriate treatment method.
"Hair loss can be caused by many different reasons, from common causes to causes that are difficult to diagnose. Therefore, when experiencing hair loss, patients should go to the hospital so that doctors can find the cause and treat it properly. There is no single treatment method that is the same for all cases of hair loss," Associate Professor Doanh advised.
