35 years of pioneering knowledge, creating the digital future

Since the establishment of the Institute of Extended Training (the predecessor of Ho Chi Minh City Open University) in the early 1990s, the Distance Learning program at Ho Chi Minh City Open University has gone through a journey of more than 35 years of formation and development, affirming its pioneering position and making significant contributions to the country's education.

This is not only a new training model but also a vivid demonstration of the philosophy of "open education , bringing knowledge to everyone, building a learning society, lifelong learning".

ENSURING TRAINING QUALITY AND FLEXIBILITY IN LEARNING

As the first university in Vietnam to implement open and distance learning (DET) training, Ho Chi Minh City Open University is committed to ensuring the quality of DET is on par with formal training. This is demonstrated through comprehensive mechanisms and solutions from its inception to the current digital transformation era.

The Open University of Ho Chi Minh City focuses on quality, ensuring that the output standards of training programs are equal to those of regular programs. This model creates equal access to university education for many people, especially those who are working or do not have the conditions to study full-time.

DTTX is an "unlimited learning bridge", eliminating barriers of space and time, allowing learners to study anytime, anywhere. Learners can arrange their own flexible study time, through many learning methods such as direct learning, online, or through radio channels. This form helps learners significantly reduce travel and accommodation costs compared to studying in large cities.

A clear demonstration of the quality of training is that graduates of the DTTX and Work-Study (VLVH) are awarded bachelor's and engineer degrees equivalent to those of the regular training form, with full rights to continue studying master's and doctoral programs. The tuition fees of the DTTX and VLVH are lower than those of other training programs at the school, but the quality is still guaranteed.

PIONEER IN APPLYING INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION

In the context of digital transformation, Ho Chi Minh City Open University has actively applied information technology to improve teaching quality and learner experience:

Edusoft.net System: Used to manage the entire administrative process, from online admission records, training planning, test score management, graduation review, to salary payment.

Learning Management System (LMS): Provides a modern online learning platform, displays lecture information, creates learning forums and lively discussions, allows lecturers to design online tests and exams.

Online training (E-learning): The school has prepared technical infrastructure, trained staff and lecturers and pioneered online training. E-learning is an advanced learning method, suitable for the 4.0 education trend, helping learners "overcome" barriers of time and space.

Ho Chi Minh City Open University is also one of the 10 excellent and talented training centers in educational technology by 2025.

Multimedia support: The school has invested in equipment to guide learning via videoconference (since 2009). The school cooperates with the Voice of Ho Chi Minh City (VOH) to upload broadcast content to the internet, helping students to listen or re-listen to lessons anytime, anywhere. Up to now, the school still maintains a learning channel and shares knowledge via the VOH radio channel.

LEARNING WITHOUT LIMITATIONS OF SPACE AND TIME

Ho Chi Minh City Open University is one of the largest centers for distance learning in the country, developing strongly in the southern region. The distance learning program has effectively implemented the policy of socializing education, opening up learning opportunities for learners in remote, border, and island areas, overcoming all natural geographical barriers, learning without space and time limits.

The school currently trains 22 majors in DTTX and 6 majors in VLVH, in many fields, meeting the needs of learners and the labor market. The training program is built on the basis of international experience research and is constantly compared, improved and updated. In particular, the program focuses on foreign language and information technology certificates according to the 3B criteria (knowing management, knowing foreign languages, knowing information technology).

With a network of training cooperation/association units in 26 provinces and cities across the country and nearly 60 training cooperation units, the school has created favorable conditions for learners to access knowledge right in their locality and workplace.

The DTTX program encourages and trains learners in time management skills, self-discipline, self-study and research ability. At the same time, the school always cares and creates conditions through implementing many scholarship and financial support policies (see box) , along with exciting cultural, artistic and sports exchange programs, contributing to building a dynamic and humane learning environment, helping learners to both acquire in-depth knowledge and practice comprehensive skills.

With the practical values that the Vocational Training Program brings, Ho Chi Minh City Open University is not only a place to provide knowledge but also a launching pad for learners to conquer their dreams and contribute to the community.

The school always puts students at the center of the training process and is ready to accompany them throughout the journey of conquering knowledge, acquiring knowledge and practical skills.

Ho Chi Minh City Open University has implemented many scholarship and financial support policies to help students study with peace of mind. For example, students who are former students participating in the combined DTTX and VLVH program receive 3 million VND/enrollment period. For students who are former students of the DTTX center, the school also has many other valuable scholarships. See the list of training majors and admission information at: tuyensinh.oude.edu.vn.

Affirming international position

The school also affirms its international position as a member of the International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE); Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU); Distance Education Center of the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO); ASEAN University Network (AUN).

In 2023, the school is the first university in Vietnam to receive the "Making a Difference for Students" award from Quality Matters (USA). In the QS rankings, the school was honored to be ranked 126th in Southeast Asia, 721-730 in Asia; The school was also ranked 6th in Vietnam and 1201-1500 in the world by Times Higher Education (THE) in 2026.
