Hanoi has just announced the number of students registering for the 10th grade entrance exam at non-specialized public high schools for the 2025-2026 school year. Accordingly, the whole city has 103,456 candidates registering for their first choice; 100,107 candidates registering for their second choice; 63,376 candidates registering for their third choice. Meanwhile, the total enrollment quota for grade 10 assigned by the Hanoi Department of Education and Training to 115 non-specialized public schools is 75,670.

According to VietNamNet statistics, there are 45 public high schools with higher competition rates for 10th grade entrance exams this year than last year. This means that candidates applying to these schools will face higher competition to win a place in 10th grade.

Yen Hoa High School continues to top the list with a high competition ratio of 1/2.44. However, the competition ratio of this school is lower than last year (1/3.11) because this year the assigned quota increased by 90 while the number of students registering for the school's first choice decreased by 228 applications.

Besides high schools with high competition ratios (such as Yen Hoa High School with a competition ratio of 1/2.44; Le Quy Don - Ha Dong High School with a competition ratio of 1/2.35; Kim Lien High School with a competition ratio of 1/2.15,...), some schools have very low competition ratios.

Specifically, there are 13 high schools with the number of candidates registering for the first choice lower than the quota. These schools are all located in suburban districts. This year, Tho Xuan and Dai Cuong high schools have "dethroned" Minh Quang high school after 2 consecutive years at the top of the list of schools with the lowest competition rate.

Specifically, Tho Xuan High School has the lowest competition rate for grade 10 admission this year in Hanoi (about 1/0.64). The number of students registering for their first choice for grade 10 at this school is 348 while the school's quota is 540.

Right behind are Dai Cuong High School (competition ratio 1/0.65) and Minh Quang High School (competition ratio 1/0.73).

In 2025, it is expected that the entire city of Hanoi will have about 127,000 students considered to graduate from junior high school.

The total enrollment target for grade 10 in 2025 assigned by the Hanoi Department of Education and Training to 122 public and autonomous public schools is 1,795 classes with 79,740 students. Thus, an increase of nearly 5,000 targets compared to last year.

Of the 115 non-specialized public high schools, in the 2025-2026 school year, 71 schools increased their enrollment quotas compared to the 2024-2025 school year; 41 schools kept their enrollment quotas the same and 3 schools reduced their enrollment quotas.

Some schools increased their quotas, such as Viet Duc High School, Da Phuc High School and Thuong Tin High School, which increased by 135 students compared to last year; Tran Phu High School - Hoan Kiem, Kim Lien High School, Yen Hoa High School, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School, Xuan Dinh High School, and My Dinh High School, which all increased by 90 students compared to last year. On the contrary, Phung Khac Khoan High School - Thach That decreased its quota the most with 135 students.

In 2025, the entrance exam for non-specialized public high schools in Hanoi will take place on June 7 and 8 with 3 subjects: Math, Literature and Foreign Language.

Students can register for the foreign language exam in one of the following subjects: English, French, German, Japanese, Korean (depending on ability, it is not required to take the foreign language exam studied at secondary school); in the case of students registering for German as a second foreign language, 7-year system, the foreign language exam must be in German.

On the morning of June 7, candidates will take the Literature exam for 120 minutes; in the afternoon of the same day, they will take the Foreign Language exam for 60 minutes. On the morning of June 8, candidates will take the Math exam for 120 minutes.

The formula for calculating the admission score (ADS) for grade 10 in Hanoi this year is as follows: ADS = Math score + Literature score + Foreign language score + priority score (if any) + incentive score (if any).
