49 years of fulfilling responsibilities at the border

The An Giang Border Guard (BĐBP) was formerly an armed security and reconnaissance force during the resistance war against French colonialism and American imperialism. On June 17, 1976, the provincial Border Guard was officially established under the name of the Provincial People's Armed Police. For nearly half a century, the soldiers in green uniforms have written golden pages of history on the An Giang border.

Not long after its establishment, An Giang Border Guard officers and soldiers had to enter the war to protect the southwestern border. On April 30, 1977, all 11 border units on the border simultaneously opened fire against the invading Pol Pot army. Over the course of 3 years, the independent units fought 986 large and small battles; coordinated with local militia and guerrilla forces and main force troops to fight hundreds of battles, annihilating more than 1,000 enemies, capturing many weapons and combat vehicles. Many officers and soldiers (CBCS) upheld the revolutionary offensive spirit, even though they were wounded, they did not leave the battlefield, sticking to fight with their comrades, such as: Tran Van Dep, Nguyen Ngoc Dam, Huynh Van Sang... The Party and State awarded the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces to the collective of the 2nd Mobile Squadron (Border Guard Station 933), and individual martyr Hoang Kim Long (Song Tien Border Guard Station). 130 officers and soldiers fought heroically and sacrificed their lives; 67 comrades were wounded, leaving behind part of their blood and bones in the trenches, on the fields, and in the mountains and rivers of their homeland An Giang.

“The station is home, the border is the homeland, and the people of all ethnic groups are blood brothers” has become the motto of each border guard officer and soldier in carrying out the task of protecting national sovereignty . The provincial Border Guard is assigned to manage a nearly 100km long border section; adjacent to Kandal and Takeo provinces (Kingdom of Cambodia). The entire unit proactively studies, grasps, evaluates, and accurately forecasts the situation, promptly reports and advises superiors and localities on the contents and measures for border management and protection, avoiding being passive or surprised.

Regardless of the circumstances, all officers and soldiers of the Provincial Border Guard always train, practice, compete, and achieve many good results; especially participating in defense area drills at the provincial and district levels; drills at the command level, border posts, battalions, and mobile companies... achieving good results, ensuring absolute safety; contributing to improving the combat level and combat readiness of the troops. Maintain strict implementation of treaties, agreements, and cooperation agreements between Vietnam and Cambodia; organize patrols, control, and strictly manage the border and border gates, and maintain the status quo of the border line and border markers. In particular, during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020 - 2022), the Provincial Border Guard deployed more than 200 teams and posts, thousands of officers and soldiers day and night to perform "dual" tasks: both managing and protecting the border, fighting and preventing all kinds of crimes; and preventing and fighting epidemics. Many comrades temporarily put aside personal matters (parents passed away, wives and children were sick, weddings were postponed), volunteered to go to the front line to fight the epidemic, and excellently completed their assigned tasks.

“The country is living in peace and independence, but that does not mean that the role of border guards is light. The border in peacetime has its own complexities and demands, especially in the period of development and integration of the country. The provincial Border Guard force must face a new war, fighting against all kinds of crimes. Promoting the heroic tradition of the force, officers and soldiers flexibly and sharply apply professional measures; build and deploy peak and specialized plans; establish specialized projects, effectively fight against all kinds of crimes” - Colonel Tran Quoc Khanh, Commander of the provincial Border Guard shared.

Typical evidence is that the unit caught 15 cases of illegal trading and transportation of weapons and explosives, confiscating 11 guns of various types, more than 500kg of firecrackers; 9 cases of illegal transportation of gold, foreign currency, counterfeit money across the border, confiscating over 50kg of gold, 540,000 USD, 2 million counterfeit Vietnamese Dong; over 200 cases of illegal transportation of drugs, confiscating over 300kg of various drugs, 500kg of marijuana; caught over 5,500 cases of illegal entry and exit; over 4,000 cases of smuggling... worth over 250 billion VND. Typically, such as: Project AG420, AG620 seized 70.7kg of drugs, received a letter of commendation from the Prime Minister; Project AG-1224p seized 12kg of gold, was awarded the Second Class Medal of Military Exploit by the President... contribute to the cause of building socialism and defending the Fatherland in the new situation.

Border Guard Command works in An Giang

In addition to performing professional tasks, the provincial Border Guard force also actively participates in building and consolidating a strong local political system; promoting the role of border guards participating in Party committees and People's Councils at all levels; border guard station party members participating in party cell activities in hamlets and villages and taking charge of households in border areas. Agencies and units actively propagate and mobilize people to comply with the Party's guidelines and policies, the State's policies and laws; implementing "People's Border Guard Day", mass movements to participate in self-management of border markers and maintaining security and order in border hamlets and villages; the movement "All people participate in protecting territorial sovereignty and national border security in the new situation"...

Party committees and commanders at all levels regularly pay attention to building clean and strong Party organizations, "exemplary" comprehensively strong units, and excellently strong mass organizations; doing well in political and ideological education; disseminating and popularizing laws; maintaining order in living, studying and working according to regulations; focusing on innovating working methods and styles; raising awareness of organizational discipline; promoting the application of information technology, reforming administrative procedures... Thereby, creating a comprehensive strength to ensure that the Provincial Border Guard always successfully completes all assigned tasks.

“With the achievements in the process of building, fighting and growing, the provincial Border Guard force was awarded the Second and Third Class Military Exploit Medals by the Party and the State; First and Second Class Feat of Arms Medals; Third Class Fatherland Protection Medals. There were 3 collectives awarded the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces; 1 individual Hero in the fight to protect the southwestern border; thousands of collectives and individuals were awarded medals of all kinds, flags leading the emulation movement, certificates of merit from all levels for their outstanding achievements in performing their tasks” - Senior Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Van Hiep, Secretary of the Party Committee, Political Commissar of the provincial Border Guard proudly said.

Today's mark is a brilliant milestone, a driving force urging all officers and soldiers of An Giang province's border guards to strive to study, practice, unite, be creative, and be determined to excellently complete all assigned tasks, continue to write glorious history in the new era, making that tradition forever green and sustainable.
