Metabolic syndrome is a group of conditions that increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. Some risk factors can be controlled through lifestyle changes.
Here are signs that you have metabolic syndrome.
1. Always thirsty
Excessive thirst and increased urination are early warning signs that your blood sugar levels may be higher than normal, says Kerry Conlon, a registered dietitian and nutritionist in the US. If you frequently feel thirsty and can’t quench your thirst, see your doctor to get your blood sugar tested.
2. Always feel tired
If you’re constantly feeling tired, sleepy, or stressed, it could be a sign of high blood sugar. High blood sugar signals that your body needs attention when it comes to regulating energy, says Andrea Hinojosa, founder of Honest Health & Wellness.
3. Notice changes in your skin
If you notice any major changes in your skin, it could be a sign of metabolic syndrome. Another sign of metabolic syndrome is dark, velvety patches of skin called acanthosis nigricans. These patches often develop on the back of the neck, armpits, and groin.
4. Tingling and numbness in the legs
If you have pain, burning, tingling, and numbness in your feet, you may have metabolic syndrome. Insulin resistance, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and abnormal cholesterol levels can damage the nerves and blood vessels in your lower extremities, leading to peripheral neuropathy and vascular disease, says Adam Hotchkiss, DPM, a podiatrist.
5. Frequent headaches
There are many causes of headaches: dehydration, stress, excessive screen time. But if severe headaches and migraines are linked to high blood pressure, it could be a sign of metabolic syndrome.
