The foreign ministers of five Arab countries, including Egypt, Qatar, Jordan, Iraq and Saudi Arabia, and their counterparts from Russia, Turkey and Iran on December 7 called for a political solution to the Syrian crisis to end military operations and protect civilians in the Middle Eastern country.
After a meeting on the situation in Syria held in Doha (Qatar) on December 7, the foreign ministers of the above 8 countries issued a statement stating: "The current crisis in Syria is a dangerous development for the safety of this country as well as regional and international security. International efforts need to be strengthened to provide humanitarian aid to the Syrian people and ensure sustainable and unhindered access."
The statement calls for an end to military operations in Syria to launch a comprehensive political process based on UN Security Council Resolution 2254.
The meeting between the foreign ministers of Egypt, Qatar, Jordan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Turkey and Iran took place hours after Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced that Tehran, Moscow and Ankara had agreed to promote political dialogue between the Syrian government and legitimate opposition groups in the country.
In a related development, the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that rebels in Syria entered Homs, Syria's third largest city, on the evening of December 7 (local time), and took control of several areas.
"Rebel factions entered Homs city and took control of several neighborhoods after security forces and the army withdrew from their last positions in the city," said SOHR head Rami Abdel Rahman.
Hundreds of prisoners have escaped from the city's central prison, Mr. Rahman noted.
A top commander of the rebel alliance in Syria, named Hassan Abdel Ghani, also confirmed that this force had entered Homs and freed more than 3,500 prisoners from the central prison.
Meanwhile, the Syrian Ministry of Defense announced that Homs is still under their control, with the army still holding positions around the city.
