On May 29, Hoa Binh General Hospital announced that it had just received and treated 6 people who were poisoned after eating rocket crocodile eggs.
Before being admitted to the hospital, the patients processed a 10kg alligator (ornamental fish) for food. The fish body was processed into a steamed fish dish, while the fish eggs were used to cook with yeast.
The whole family and some acquaintances then ate together. Those who ate the steamed fish did not show any abnormal health symptoms. However, 6 men who sat at the same table, ate steamed fish and fish eggs cooked with fermented rice, and showed abnormal symptoms 3-4 hours after eating.
All patients had symptoms of vomiting, severe abdominal pain and frequent bowel movements. The most severe patient had more than 10 bowel movements, headaches, dizziness and fatigue.
After receiving initial first aid at the District Medical Center, the patients were transferred to Hoa Binh Provincial General Hospital.
Upon admission to Hoa Binh General Hospital, the patients were all in a state of fatigue, abdominal pain, vomiting and frequent diarrhea. Along with that were symptoms of headache and dizziness. Initial tests showed metabolic acidosis and water-electrolyte disturbances. The patients were quickly treated and given intensive care by doctors from many specialties in the hospital.
Doctors quickly used measures to eliminate toxins, administer intravenous fluids, and replenish water and electrolytes for the patients. After 2 days of intensive treatment and care, the 6 patients are now out of danger and are being monitored at Hoa Binh General Hospital.
