This morning, November 27, the 3rd national conference on computational linguistics with the theme "Technology for Humanity", especially the application of AI in learning and working in the field of language, took place at the University of Foreign Languages and Information Technology, Ho Chi Minh City, with the participation of hundreds of researchers, experts and reporters from universities and research institutes at home and abroad.
The event aims to create a forum for academic exchange on advances in computational linguistics (NLP), the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in preserving language, culture, developing education and serving the community. At the same time, it promotes research cooperation between training units, research institutes and experts at home and abroad.
Students of Ho Chi Minh City University of Foreign Languages and Information Technology at the workshop asked questions about AI applications in language learning.

Present at the workshop, Associate Professor Dr. Dinh Dien, Director of the Center for Computational Linguistics, University of Science (Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City), presented research on AI application in translating Nom documents into Quoc Ngu script.
According to Associate Professor, Dr. Dinh Dien, in the past, even the most powerful AI systems in the world could not translate Nom script, a type of script created by our ancestors around the 10th century based on Chinese characters and used until the 19th century.
"During those thousand years, there were countless works on history, literature, agricultural medicine, geography... written in Han Nom script and most of those documents have not been translated into today's Quoc Ngu script," Associate Professor, Dr. Dinh Dien said.
Therefore, he and his research team built an automatic translation system for Han Nom documents. This translation system includes many internal processing problems such as image classification; image recognition; text classification; transliteration, also known as phonetic translation; translation into contemporary languages.
"The system will help users read, understand, exploit and explore the valuable treasure of knowledge written in Han Nom characters passed down by our ancestors through today's Quoc Ngu script," Associate Professor, Doctor, Master Dinh Dien informed.
Also at the conference, 48/98 research projects were reported. Scientists focused on key research directions such as: Application of computational linguistics in the conservation and restoration of indigenous languages and minority languages at risk of extinction; the role of natural language processing (NLP) in multilingual communication, improving the quality of automatic and specialized translation; application of AI in personalizing the learning journey, building an automatic language assessment system and supporting adaptive learning...
Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Vu, Vice Principal of the University of Foreign Languages and Information Technology, Ho Chi Minh City, said that this year's conference received outstanding attention, with nearly 100 reports submitted. The research not only focused on pure technology but also expanded to areas of profound social significance, such as preserving ethnic languages, equity in education, and speech therapy.
"The workshop is a bridge, helping the scientific exchange between the two knowledge blocks of language and information technology become increasingly closer. From that connection, many valuable ideas and applications have emerged to help students majoring in linguistics not only learn languages but also be given the opportunity to develop technological expertise, using AI as a powerful tool for language research. And vice versa, information technology students also understand better the specificity of linguistics," said Dr. Ngoc Vu.
