Sesko has only scored 2 goals for Manchester United. |
Amorim is not worried about Sesko not living up to expectations at Manchester United. The Slovenian has scored just two goals in 11 games since joining the club for £73.7m from RB Leipzig. The pressure is on the 22-year-old, but Amorim remains calm.
He believes that this is natural for an inexperienced rookie. Sesko came to England with great expectations, labeled as a “future star”, so the reaction of the media or former players is inevitable. The Portuguese coach believes that young players need to learn to accept criticism, because it is part of top football.
“I understand football, and he will have a hard time,” Amorim said. “When people say you are the next big star, you hear that. But if you don’t play well every week, you will be criticised, and sometimes they are right.”
According to Amorim, Sesko is a perfectionist and wants to control everything, but that is the biggest challenge. The player always arrives at the training ground at 8am and does not leave until 4pm, showing a rare dedication. However, his strictness with himself makes him vulnerable to criticism.
“The ability to understand that it's normal is hard for a boy,” Amorim shared.
After the 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest, former United defender Gary Neville said Sesko was “far from the level needed”. Amorim did not deny that fact, but stressed the need to turn difficulties into motivation. He considered criticism an inevitable part of the process of growing up.
“Nobody likes to hear that,” Amorim said. “But what is true today may be different in three weeks.”

Amorim is helping Sesko through the crisis. |
Amorim advised his players to treat criticism like “a normal Monday”, and insisted the team would defend Sesko because he “works very hard and really wants to succeed”. For him, effort and attitude are the deciding factors, not goalscoring numbers.
In addition to Sesko's issue, Amorim also mentioned the personnel plan for next season. He said that Bruno Fernandes may have to accept rotation if the team returns to European Cup.
Manchester United currently play only one game a week, so there is no need to change. But if the schedule gets more packed, every player, including the captain, will have to adapt to the rest.
Regarding the future of Casemiro and Harry Maguire, two players whose contracts expire next summer, Amorim did not make any commitments. He said that this was not the time to discuss the future. The whole team needed to focus on the rest of the season, before considering big decisions next year.
