An Giang: Long Xuyen City develops remarkably after 25 years of establishment

On the evening of March 1, the People's Committee of Long Xuyen City, An Giang Province held a ceremony to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the establishment of Long Xuyen City (March 1, 1999 - March 1, 2024). Attending the ceremony were member of the Party Central Committee, Secretary of the An Giang Provincial Party Committee Le Hong Quang; representatives of the leaders of the People's Council, the Provincial People's Committee, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of An Giang Province, and representatives of departments, branches and sectors.

According to the leaders of Long Xuyen City, before 1999, Long Xuyen City was a small, old, degraded urban area, the majority of people's lives still faced many difficulties; the economic structure, trade and services were small. Immediately after that, the Party Committee and the People of Long Xuyen immediately embarked on the city's construction, focusing all resources on socio-economic development, reorganizing a new life; promoting construction and urbanization of Long Xuyen town.

From that result, on March 1, 1999, the Government issued Decree No. 99/ND-CP on the establishment of Long Xuyen City in An Giang province.

Chairman of Long Xuyen City People's Committee Dinh Van Bao informed that after 25 years of construction and development, Long Xuyen City has gone through two memorable milestones in the period of 1999-2010 . During this time, the city focused on urban construction, economic and social infrastructure, creating potential and foundation for upgrading the urban area in a synchronous and modern direction. As a result, the economy achieved a high growth rate, with GRDP per capita in 2010 being 41 million VND/person/year, 2.5 times higher than in 2005. In particular, it completed the criteria for a type 2 urban area according to Resolution 3 of the Provincial Party Standing Committee .

From 2010 to present, due to the impact of the global economic crisis, although the growth rate is lower, it is still stable at an average of over 12%/year, the economic structure is shifting rapidly in a positive direction. Economic sectors are developing strongly, the number of enterprises is increasing rapidly, currently there are 1,380 enterprises and over 16,000 individual production and business establishments operating effectively. The average GRDP per capita in 2023 will reach 130 million VND/person/year, an increase of 2.26 times the average income per capita of the whole country.

The leaders of Long Xuyen City emphasized that the city's position and prestige have been increasingly enhanced, and that the Party, State and province have awarded it many noble titles. In recent times, Long Xuyen City has always received attention and timely and close direction from the Central leaders and former leaders of the Provincial Party Committee, People's Council, People's Committee, and the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the province, as well as the solidarity of the business community and all the people of the city.

In order for Long Xuyen to continue to develop to be worthy of being the central urban area of the province and the region, Vice Chairman of An Giang Provincial People's Committee Le Van Phuoc requested the Party Committee, government and people of Long Xuyen City to promote the spirit of solidarity, determination to lead, well implement policies and investment incentives for enterprises; well implement social security policies, sustainable poverty reduction solutions and focus on improving the material and spiritual life of the people.

Long Xuyen City leaders also need to be proactive and creative in effectively implementing tasks and breakthrough solutions for rapid and sustainable economic development. Strengthening the building and rectification of a clean and strong Party in terms of politics, ideology, ethics, organization and cadres, considering this a key and decisive task for development.
