Witnessing the freshwater "monsters"

This "sea monster" school consists of hundreds of freshwater fish such as giant catfish and giant barbs with huge sizes and weights that have been taken care of by the resort owner for the past 4 years.

Mr. Ho Hoang Phong Nha, the person responsible for raising the giant fish, said: “I remember in 2021, the tourist area brought back a giant catfish weighing more than 80kg. After several years of raising it, it now weighs over 100kg. Currently, the biggest one weighs about 150kg.

The rest are 40-60kg fish. The big fish will gain weight slowly at this stage. We also do not fatten them because to ensure their growth, we have to let them grow naturally," said Mr. Nha.

Mr. Nha revealed that the giant catfish school at Cantho Eco Resort currently has about 26 fish weighing 80kg or more. There are about 100 giant catfish weighing 18kg or more.

With such a huge number, to "move house" for them, it takes 20 strong men, taking 2 days to complete the job.

“We have to ensure the best living conditions for them. Some fish are put in glass tanks for visitors to see. The larger ones are arranged in a lake area designed with a rockery,” said Mr. Nha.

A giant catfish

Catfish and giant barbs are both giant fish in the Hau River. They live in deep, whirlpool waters upstream.

Nearly half a century ago, in the Vam Nao River (An Giang), veteran fishermen often caught them on the river. But now there are almost no traces of them in the Hau River basin.
