Eating blueberries reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes

VnExpressVnExpress11/06/2023

Anthocyanin-rich blueberries improve insulin sensitivity, help reduce inflammation, and may prevent or delay type 2 diabetes.

According to research from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (USA), the anthocyanin content (a type of flavonoid that gives the fruit its color) in blueberries can help improve insulin sensitivity in obese people and people with insulin resistance. Therefore, blueberries can reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. In addition, consuming this fruit can improve glucose tolerance, support blood sugar control, and play a role in preventing or delaying type 2 diabetes.

Research from the University of East Anglia (UK) shows that anthocyanin in blueberries can help reduce inflammation and reduce body weight. Inflammation and obesity are two risk factors that increase the development of diabetes. Anthocyanin can also reduce the risk of high blood pressure and coronary artery disease. In addition, people who regularly consume a lot of this substance have less body fat, supporting weight loss and reducing the risk of disease.

Researchers at the University of East Anglia also pointed out that this fruit is also rich in polyphenol antioxidants that help inhibit oxidative stress and free radicals that cause cell damage. Thanks to that, eating blueberries can help prevent chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease and degenerative diseases.

According to the American Institute for Cancer Research, blueberries are high in fiber and low in calories (a 148-gram cup of fruit contains 3.6 grams of fiber and only 84 calories). Foods high in fiber make you feel full longer, so you eat less. This can reduce your risk of being overweight and obese, which increases your risk of developing diabetes, cancer, and many other diseases. Blueberries are a healthy choice when you want a sweet snack but don't want to sabotage your weight loss efforts.

Eating moderate amounts of blueberries, about one-third cup (containing less than 50 mg of anthocyanins), may help reduce the risk of diabetes.
