Coming to the Mong and Ha Nhi villages in the highlands of Bat Xat district, you will often see men diligently weaving baskets. The basket weaving profession has existed for a long time and has been passed down through generations. The raw material for weaving baskets is bamboo that grows in the forest. People choose bamboo that is 2-3 years old so that the bamboo strips are flexible and durable. To weave a basket, one must go through many stages, requiring the weaver not only to have skillful hands but also to be patient and diligent. Bamboo baskets are familiar tools for people in the highlands when working in the fields, picking vegetables, collecting firewood, going to the market...
In addition to weaving baskets, the Ha Nhi people can also weave bamboo and rattan trays which require a high level of difficulty. Ha Nhi people's trays are woven from many materials such as rattan, bamboo, and apricot trees. The tray surface is woven from large strips split from apricot tree trunks. Nowadays, in Ha Nhi villages, there are only a few middle-aged and elderly people who know how to weave trays. Their bamboo and rattan trays are not only beautiful but also durable for decades. The Dao ethnic group in some villages of Bat Xat district also has a traditional rattan chair making profession, however, those who are still keeping the rattan chair making profession are all elderly.
Handicraft products from the ethnic minorities in the highlands of Bat Xat district serve daily life and are sold at markets, helping people earn extra income.
Handicraft weaving is a cultural beauty of ethnic minorities in the highlands of Bat Xat district. However, preserving and teaching the craft is facing many difficulties because the artisans are all old, while the young generation is not very interested in the traditional craft.
