Dong Thap farmer earns 33 million VND/ha from growing rice thanks to using biological pesticides

On the morning of April 9, in Thap Muoi district, Dong Thap province, Map Pacific Singapore Company Limited (MPS Company) organized Summary of the model "safe and effective use of pesticides and use of biological pesticides on rice".

Previously, implementing the "Commitment to coordinate the implementation of the Project on developing production and use of biological pesticides until 2030, with a vision to 2050" between the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection and MPS Company, in the first quarter of 2025, MPS Company conducted training activities for farmers and deployed a model of safe and effective use of pesticides and the use of biological pesticides on rice.

The model was implemented on 6.4 hectares of OM18 rice in the Summer-Autumn crop of Mr. Nguyen Thanh Xuan's household in Hamlet 4, Thanh Loi Commune, Thap Muoi District, Dong Thap Province. The application period is from January 15 and the expected harvest date is April 25, 2025.
During the rice production process, Mr. Xuan sows sparsely, fertilizes in a balanced manner, visits the fields regularly, and only applies pest control solutions at really necessary stages, prioritizing the use of organic and biological plant protection products.

Mr. Xuan manages bacterial leaf blight with biological products Map Strong 3WP in rotation with Map Oni 2SL, which is both highly effective and environmentally friendly.

In particular, managing nematodes on rice with biological solutions (Map Logic 90WP). The product helps balance soil pH, supplement minerals, and help the rice root system develop well.

As a result, the rice blast and bacterial leaf blight index in the field was lower than that in the surrounding farmers' fields at different times after spraying. In addition, nematode management was effective.

At the model summary meeting, Mr. Xuan shared that in the past, he and many other local households only grew rice according to tradition, using only chemical pesticides.

However, when following the model, he learned a lot about new techniques, especially solutions to deal with nematodes that harm rice (rice grows slowly and cannot absorb fertilizer). In addition, the index of rice blast and leaf blight is very low.

According to Mr. Xuan, although not yet harvested, the estimated yield is about 8 tons/ha, with the current rice price of 7,100 VND/kg, after deducting costs, the profit will be about 33 million VND/ha (the rice area of the surrounding people is about 20 million VND/ha).

In addition to good pest management, using biological products will help you stay safe when spraying and protect the environment.

MPS Company representative said that, in addition to the obvious effectiveness above, the application of the company's process also significantly reduces the use of fertilizers and pesticides, thus limiting the impact on natural enemies, increasing beneficial insects in the fields, creating an environment for beneficial organisms to develop.

Mr. Tran Thanh Tam - Head of the Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection of Dong Thap province highly appreciated the effectiveness of the model. According to him, the model has helped farmers save about 2.6 million VND/ha, and the profit is also quite higher than outside the model.

In the coming time, Mr. Tam hopes that the model will be well applied to the Project of 1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta. That is, it will help farmers reduce investment costs to the lowest level, but achieve the highest profits.

The model of using safe and effective pesticides and biological pesticides on rice, implemented by MPS Company, aims to help farmers manage pests in the fields with effective organic and biological solutions, improve productivity and quality of agricultural products, and increase profits in rice production.

To widely disseminate the process of applying the above-mentioned biological products for integrated pest management in rice production to many farmers, on April 9, MPS Company organized for more than 300 agents and farmers to visit Mr. Xuan's field.
